Terry has attained a celebrity status as a photographer and now embraces that culture as the subject of his work. Do you think the title of the exhibition was intended as a play on this idea?

Richardson described his style as, "Trying to capture those unpremeditated moments when people's sexualities come up to the surface." [39] While he was born in Los Angeles TERRYWOOD marked the artist’s first solo show in his hometown. The exhibition of over 25 C-Print photographs at OHWOW ran earlier this year and presented a pictorial version of Hollywood devoid of celebrities but filled with stars and signage. The primary tenet of Mono-ha, it continues, "explores the encounter between natural and industrial objects in and of themselves arranged directly on the floor or in an outdoor field." This volume compiles all of the photographs from Terry Richardson’s wildly successful 2012 show Terrywood, held at the OHWOW gallery in Los Angeles. Terrywood is the photographer’s vision of everything that Hollywood has meant and continues to mean in the public imagination: grand-scale glitz, big-budget glamour—and of course the awards ceremonies, in homage to which Richardson produced a series of ten award statuettes for the show, fashioned in his own bespectacled likeness. These works and all of the photographs included in the exhibition are reproduced here, alongside documentation of the year-long process of planning the exhibition, and coverage of the opening night, which was attended by celebrities such as Tom Ford, James Franco, Odd Future, Sasha Grey, Paris Hilton, Paz de la Huerta, Jared Leto, Lindsay Lohan and Frank Ocean, and which has already become legendary as one of the glitziest opening nights in recent memory. Terrywood also includes texts by Jeffrey Deitch and Al Moran. An artist often attributed with changing the field of photography, Richardson also defies the ideological limitations of the practice, while redefining an epitome. Terrywood takes all that Hollywood represents, the celebrity, broken dreams, kitsch, and sorted history, but, just as with all of Richardson’s well-known work, he re-contextualizes familiar imagery, re-identifying it with characteristics reflective of his own persona, imparting them with a different narrative.
