After spending most of the 1970s making over-the-top horror movies in the UK, Lee moved to the US to prevent himself from being typecast. While his first American film was the disaster epic Airport ‘77, he went on to astonish his fanbase and general audiences by hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live in 1978. Lee died at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on 7 June 2015 after being admitted for respiratory problems and heart failure, shortly after celebrating his 93rd birthday. His wife delayed the public announcement until 11 June, informing his family of the death before releasing the news to the press. [175] [176] [177] Lee’s grandparents were actually responsible for bringing Australia it’s first opera company. Lee himself would lend his incredible voice to opera pieces as well throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, in between acting in films. Movie buffs will be able to recognize the game of connecting actors to one another through other actors they’ve worked with. This game is called “Six Degrees of Separation” but is more popularly referred to as “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” due to that actor’s prolific career. However, Guinness officially recognized Lee as the most connected actor in the world, being connectable to anyone in Hollywood in an average of 2.5 steps. Impressive. 2. I Have Seen Death

Christopher Lee lived an incredible life. The commonly know details are startling enough - the star of not only the Hammer Horror Universe during its heyday (Dracula, Fu Manchu and The Mummy being perhaps his most well known roles) but also a key character in some of the most well regarded and beloved science fiction and fantasy series of all time; The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Star Wars prequels (I will overlook that he was in the prequels as opposed to the original trilogy - we are none of us perfect). If you look on IMDB you will find 278 acting credits to Lee's name.

Lord of Misrule: The Autobiography of Christopher Lee - Lee

I will admit that the reading was a little slow at the beginning because Christopher Lee's actual voice comes through loud and strong in the book. If you're familiar with the man, it's VERY easy to picture him telling the story, as the word choices, rhythm of the sentences, and turns of phrase are very distinctive. For this reason, when I first started I couldn't help but hear Lee "reading" in my head. However, he was not an excitable type, and I always felt that he chose his words carefully and said them with much deliberation, which meant that in the early chapters my reading was necessarily slow and stately. I realized this was going to slow me down, though, so I eventually settled into a better tempo for my reading. Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee CBE CStJ (27 May 1922 – 7 June 2015) was an English actor and singer. [1] In a long career which spanned over 60 years, Lee often portrayed villains, and appeared as Count Dracula in seven Hammer Horror films. His other film roles include Francisco Scaramanga in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), Count Dooku in several Star Wars films (2002–2008), and Saruman in both the Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003) and the Hobbit film trilogy (2012–2014). It is in no way a chore to read and the impression it left me with was one of sitting down and being told stories by a grandfather of his past. Although Lee has some genuinely harrowing episodes in his life such as his wartime exploits in North Africa, his sense of humour is always evident and there were times when I had to sit the book down due to laughing so much!Hi-Res Look at Hilary Swank in Hammer Films' 'The Resident' ". Despite this honor, his height actually proved to be a handicap early on in Lee’s career. He couldn’t land many supporting roles because the leading actors were all much shorter than he, and this was a time when men would happily wear platform shoes to look as tall as possible on camera. Somlo sent him to see Rank's David Henley and Olive Dodds, who signed him on a seven-year contract. [71] Like other students at Rank's " Charm School," Lee had difficulty finding work. [73] He finally made his film début in 1947, in Terence Young's Gothic romance Corridor of Mirrors. [74] He played Charles; the director got around his height by placing him at a table in a nightclub alongside Lois Maxwell, Mavis Villiers, Hugh Latimer and John Penrose. Lee had a single line, "a satirical shaft meant to qualify the lead's bravura." [73] Thompson, Howard. "Movie Review: The Devil Rides Out". The New York Times . Retrieved 25 September 2022.
