Through the novel I’ve subsequently met survivors of the 7/7 bombings in London, who of course carry far worse psychological scars – as well as physical ones. Second, Cleave wrote this novel in a six-week marathon after the 2004 Madrid bombings, but before the 2005 bombings in London.

You don’t know, you just have to live every single second of your life, as a Latin author would say, ‘carpe diem’. Renata ‘Ren’ Convida is said memory thief, or more precisely a Robari – someone who can reach into other people’s minds and take away memories. Though all these skills are ones we have seen brought to life in other works of Fantasy, the author manages to put her own twist on them seemingly making them unique to this story. It was directed by Sharon Maguire and starring Michelle Williams in the main role, supported by Ewan McGregor as Jasper Black, and Matthew MacFadyen as Terrence Butcher.I believe that the good-humoured and effortful struggle to understand one another’s lives is at worst a good way to pass long journeys, and at best an antidote to violence. Soo many twists and turns and back and forths - I don’t know who to trust except to think trust no one! Now if you’re reading this thinking that Zoraida Córdova’s Incendiary might be that book, think again.

Every day, I was with your book in my hand, and page after page I started thinking that even the city I love the most isn’t perfect.I also agree with Catherine (above), “The Other Hand” should be required reading, particularly as a foil to inflammatory journalism. Cleave does not appear to come from the same milieu as his narrator (the alternative: he is, and is carrying the biggest of chips on his shoulders).

A brilliant novel, yes it's based on some fantasy tropes, but "Incendiary" by Zoraida Córdova delivers the action, intrigue and twists that make it a refreshing read. It's hard to believe she wouldn't have gotten psychiatric help along the way; she certainly needs it. She tries to make a go of life afterwards, but while she never explicitly asks the question, it's embedded in every word: how does one regain one's own sanity when the entire world has gone crazy? It is an excellent start to a new and exciting YA fantasy series, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book! Brilliantly paced, with some beautifully written characters and a whole fresh new magic system for you to dig your teeth into.

Take that personal journey away and it would be like trying build our identity, our very selves, out of rumour and dreams. I was very interested to see that you had read Room (our second last book club read, a wonderful book, and The Slap.

This is a YA fantasy novel, we meet our main character Renata who is part of a group of rebels trying to defeat the Royal Family and allow magic and its users to live in peace and stop being hunted through the land.Because there are no characters worth caring about, we fail to identify the world of the novel as our own. i won't g when her alleged underprivileged status is milked for pity and spurious social commentary, all done in a kind of jazzy self-loathing that is heady and very typical of London media now, but which can lead nowhere. We also have characters who can create illusions, who can read people’s minds and who can manipulate people’s emotions.
