Description

In this book actor Michael Caine describes being a leading actor in films, he says that his job is the carry the entire film and give life to the filmmaker’s vision. I was reading Sidney Lumet's Making Movies but wanted some more detail on actors and acting, which led me to finally open Acting in Film, which I'd learned about last September. Caine plays an agent described as a ‘trickster, insubordinate, someone who refused to follow the rules. Learn from two-time Academy Award-Winning actor Michael Caine how to properly prepare yourself for a very competitive field. Most of the acting topics that are covered in the book are explained in more detail in the masterclass.

This new revised and expanded edition features great photos throughout, with chapters on: Preparation, In Front of the Camera - Before You Shoot, The Take, Characters, Directors, On Being a Star, and much more. When sitting around set, waiting for the lighting professionals to make it just right, I'll turn to my fellow actors and say: "We're paid to wait. So many things kept in the dark brought to light I never thought about in film acting and Caine’s stories, analogies, etc. Caine, because his book is so honestly and efficiently helpful you can tell his intention is to educate and improve the art, not blow smoke. This is definitely invaluable material for anyone who wants to go into film (and in some ways theatre) from all aspects or anyone who’s every wanted a detailed idea of what a makes a film actor a professional.

He talks about entering sets where he only had one line to speak, waiting for hours to say that one line and that many stars on the film sets could be very arrogant and refused to talk to anyone below them. It’s a strange situation, but in film a person is a person, not an actor; and yet you need an actor to play the person. Acting students attending auditions now might face a completely different landscape when it comes to auditions and getting parts. A master actor who's appeared in an enormous number of films, starring with everyone from Nicholson to Kermit the Frog, Michael Caine is uniquely qualified to provide his view of making movies. Please, if you are thinking about starting an acting career or are simply looking for a book to expand your knowledge about the business, then DO consider adding this one to your list.

Michael Caine teaches the art of movie acting to five young actors, who perform scenes from Alfie (1966), Deathtrap (1982) and Educating Rita (1983). I burst with excitement when I got the role and was sweaty and nervous; convinced I was going to blow it - and this book helped me through it. The author also goes into the importance of professionalism and behavior on and off set with members of the cast and crew, as well as the Do's and Don'ts of how to deal with troublesome actors and directors, as well as dangerous stunts. He talks about his role in Alfie and how he understood Alfie but was not like him, so he pictured a friend that was very much like Alfie’s fictional character stood next to the camera and imagined him talking.Professionalism and personal advice is covered, as well as more technical advice in acting before the camera, and the differences between acting on stage and acting on camera.

Rather than try explaining everything with endless details, Michael Caine just gives it to the reader plain and simple, which is the reason why i truly appreciate this book. I found some surprising info here, little-known rules-of-thumb for entertainers I wouldn't have been able to guess at. Caine always loves to talk about his rough-and-tumble cockney upbringing; I guess I can't blame him. So naturally there is bound to be a mixture of chatty personal anecdotes and old Hollywood rubrics hashed together --yet the proportion of all this is not greater in comparison to a very useful litany of concrete, technical, 'insider tips' for actors. His first major starring roles, beginning in the 1960s, include 'Zulu,' 'The Ipcress File,' and 'Alfie. I was hoping for more insight on techniques in front of the camera - similar to Michael Caine's great acting masterclass from 1987 (I believe), which can be found on YouTube. Including a comprehensive filmography of his best and not so good films, this booklet covers a great deal.

This book is particularly helpful to actors who are crossing over from theater acting to film acting. The best movie actors become their characters to such an extent that the product isn’t viewed by an audience as a performance. Caine dismisses the idea of the 'movie star' and instead talks about the techniques and art of acting. This new revised and expanded edition features great photos throughout, with chapters on: Preparation, In Front of the Camera Before You Shoot, The Take, Characters, Directors, On Being a Star, and much more.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Biometric tests on cinema audiences, such as pulse rates, are used to advise the film companies on just how much viewers are immersed in the experience. Mr Caine knows exactly what he’s doing and his advice is the most helpful I’ve found so far on acting for the camera. It's a very handy practical guide to day-to-day-life for anyone in the film industry, and Michael Caine narrates us beautifully through his own experiences in the industry.
