From the beginning till the end "the world is cruel" is stated many times and there are several incidents which proved this. A live-action film based on the manga was released in Japan in July 2017, with a sequel being released in July 2019. I actually really like Kaneki's development as a character, although I wished he had lost more of his naivety.
