Spielplatz is the German word for 'playground', and it was established by naturists as a place of retreat. Lead curator Jane Scott says Flesh After Fifty is about promoting change in attitudes about what constitutes a healthy body image. It is unrealistic to expect all of us to be perfectly thin and sculpted, with perky breasts and no cellulite.
The hidden gated community of Spielplatz, Hertfordshire is a place where being starkers for no reason at all is normal. Word of the calendar spread through the village, and slowly but surely people came forward and signed up to take part in it.As I was taking off my clothes in the studio I felt uncomfortable, but I wanted to stand strong and proud with the other women. Sue Draycott, the photographer behind the Wonders of Whimple, says the experience of shooting the calendar was “amazing.For every woman, it’s on your mind, the question of body image and body hatred, and there isn’t any material about that for older women. Paulina Porizkova has spoken extensively about what it feels like to age in the public eye after her long modeling career, and one of the ways she processes dealing with her changing appearance is by posting photos that celebrate her current appearance, in all its glory, onto Instagram. The village’s name is one you might not have come across before, for the village itself is deep in the heart of rural Devon—a county in the south west corner of England. After the wedding the couple went on honeymoon to the world’s largest naturist village in Cape d’Agde, in the South of France. Both told me that they don’t love how they look in some of the images, but that they treasured the experience of making them with Lee, whose process is creative and collaborative. But Tom and Victoria say that few people seem to have heard about Spielplatz in the local area, in spite of it being so famous in the naturist community. That lack of visual documentation has negative health effects, Hawkes says, shutting down women having a comfortable relationship with their bodies, as well as a practical impact, making it harder for them to find employment. Mrs Anderson strives to show diversity of age, body type, ethnicity and race in her project, however she admits that has come across several hurdles.Wilson hopes that women will look at the calendar and think "she looks like me, I can relate to her. This just goes to show how society is now collectively insecure and needs the world to shape around their brittle emotions. Thanks in large part to Kim Kardashian and the rest of her intrepid family, nude photos are not nearly so scandalous or rare as they used to be.
