About this deal

Despite the pretty conclusive (and heartbreaking) end, ever since it finished fans have been keen to know if there will – or can – be a second series. My only criticism would be that there was maybe a tad too much toilet humour or unnecessary gory details in some of his anecdotes which didn’t help support the ultimate resolution of his reflections but would still highly recommend, I plan on utilising his wolf on a panini simile whenever I get the chance. Speaking of Whishaw, Kay is of course a fan of the actor cast to play the fictionalised version of Adam (who the author reminds us isn’t really him). The TV show was directed by a woman, Lucy Forbes, produced by Holly Pullinger, and exec produced by Jane Featherstone and Naomi De Pear.

He looks back at his education, re-examines the scars left by his time in the NHS, and considers his decision to blow his life up and stitch it back together. While every other chapter is a little anecdote from back in those days that links to things he touches on within the chapters, what this one actually is is more of a memoir, and we get to dig deeper into the mind of Adam Kay and kind of scope him out as a person. He essentially bared his soul to a room full of doctors about why training needed to change and become more supportive. I ask how much he cares what people think (my hunch is that he minds keenly) and he replies: “It varies.Whatever the NHS’s failings, there’s no fairer way to decide who to treat than ‘everyone’ and no better way to treat them all than ‘equally’. While at medical school, Adam had to spend a month living with a GP while shadowing them at their surgery.

I bought mine from a student a few years ahead of me and named him Dave (after my beloved Duchovny). The chapters feel like stand-alone thematic essays, alternating between more recent events (holiday mishaps, having a stalker, odd things that have happened in comedy gigs or at book signings, figuring out the protocol for a man proposing to another man, their journey towards parenthood, etc. He can dance between comedy and drama and brings huge warmth to a character who is deliberately written as not always behaving the best under the circumstances he is in. If offered, would you accept the position of secretary of state for health in the new prime minister’s cabinet?

A diary about life as a junior doctor working on an obstetrics ward seemed an unlikely publishing bet.
