About this deal

when I’ve written them into yet another sticky spot, but I know I’ll always bring the sisters – and the reader – back to a safe place. The world building is good, with plenty of descriptions to give colour to the island and help set the scene of a stormy and hostile environment. I understand I can change my preference through my account settings or unsubscribe directly from any marketing communications at any time. Set primarily on large island surrounded by three smaller ones (named Lament, Torment and Repent) it feels atmospheric and full of tension that lends itself well to the high stakes story.

Finished my re-read of A Pinch of Magic and I love it even more than I did when I read it last year.On Betty's thirteenth Birthday, Granny reveals the Widdershins are plagued by an ancient curse that has them trapped on the island's confines with death their only escape. The story-line was well-paced and brilliantly-plotted with an unknowable trajectory that kept each new escapade and spot of trouble feeling fresh and exciting. The blurb looked interesting, although I disliked all the gushing quotes from other authors included on Goodreads – which I have left out here. Like Betty, my middle sister Janet is the ‘leader’– something she secretly likes even if she pretends to find it annoying. She softens the blow by showing them three magical objects which have been passed down through generations: an old bag that transports the bearer wherever they wish to go, a mirror which shows the holder whatever they want to see, and a set of Russian dolls containing the power of invisibility.

A very enjoyable creation, I think the pacing was right where it needed to be for a game of that length. The terrain confused the heck out of me, since they were in marshland with mists and fogs making everything impossible to navigate, yet with deep channels and rocky coves (and caves) creating a big swell and breakers when a high tide rushing in. The beautiful cover alone often inspires artwork, but add the map of the Misty Marshes and the evocative descriptions of the Poacher’s Pocket Pub, the prison on the Repent Isle and the Lament Isle, you have a lovely craft playdate. And their progression through the book only added to my love for them, so much so that I’m itching to read the next book immediately.Girls who like Betty’s earthy resourcefulness, may also like Tiffany Aching in The Wee Free Man trilogy by Pratchett. Marmaid could have a different livespan, or have cultural differencies that made a romantic relation super bumpy. Betty is our more predominant heroine, though her sisters have a huge presence too, but Betty’s character is so determined and funny, she drives this story forward.
