By using the Service, and by creating an account you represent, warrant and confirm that you are of legal age. It’s worth trying a few malts from different locations – if you don’t get on with a peaty Highland malt, perhaps a light Speyside with a touch of sweetness will suit your palate better. It’s wise to add a splash of water to bring out the flavour and aroma of your dram – a process affectionately known as “releasing the serpent”. It wasn’t until Matthew Gloag III inherited the business from William in 1896 that the company registered its first blended Scotch, the Brig o’ Perth. A year later, The Famous Grouse was released at the same time as The Grouse Brand.

Originally, The Famous Grouse was priced lower than the Grouse Brand. In a little over 10 years, the reverse would be true thanks to the popularity of The Famous Grouse. As if to emphasise the family connection, it was Matthew III’s daughter, Phillippa, who drew the very first, and now famous, red grouse that we see on the bottle. The sherry influence isn’t quite as intense as with some whiskies we’ve tasted, but the result is impossible to dislike. There’s a rich, vibrant surge of flavour bursting with sherry, spice, orange peel and amaretto, all underpinned with a gentle sweetness which results in a whisky that’s dangerously drinkable. For the money, it’s one of our favourites – and a stunning dram to boot. I can still taste that fruity aspect, but it’s more like dried apricots and orange slices at this point. Much less lemon or melon, which are lighter and weaker in intensity by comparison. I can also taste much more of the traditional scotch whisky flavors — specifically, that almost bread-like malted barley flavor with a touch of honey. On ice, this is significantly closer to the original Famous Grouse. Consumers and bartenders are looking for something more unique, which is why we wanted to move the brand on and change it.’

Matthew Irving Gloag retires from the company due to ill health. The last Gloag to be involved in the company, he remains a consultant for life William Grant & Sons, the company which owns a significant chunk of Scottish distilleries including Balvenie and even Tuthilltown Spiritsin New York, helped take the company private in 2000 where it remains today. Product In 1870, following Matthew’s death, the company was sold to Highland Distillers (the same company that owns Macallan as of 1996). From there, the whisky has gained a much wider appeal, becoming the most popular whisky in Scotland in 1980 and being awarded a Royal Warrant in 1984.Now the expression is being relaunched as a standalone brand made from a selection of malt whiskies but without any grain, offeringa ‘more robust’ flavour than its blended predecessor. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. John Brown established his Perth grocery business in 1800 before moving the premises to Atholl Street seven years later. It was his daughter, Margaret, who married Matthew Gloag. She took over the family business from her father in 1824 and ran it until Matthew took control a little over a decade later. Malt whisky continues to rise in popularity with consumers and, by changing our blended Scotch to a blended malt, we can use the individuality and character of single malts and create a whisky that stands out from the crowd,’ said Elaine Miller, global marketing manager for Naked Grouse. Edrington, owner of Naked Grouse, said the change is being made in response to the increasing popularity of single malts, and demand from bartenders for an accessible whisky ‘with distinctive flavour’.

Less commonly found are blended malt whiskies – these are produced using malted barley only, but may combine malts from two or more distilleries. This typically creates a characterful blend that’s more complex than a malt-grain blend and usually cheaper than a single malt. The blended malt is said to have notes of fudge, cooked apples and cherries, and is designed as a session whisky to be drunk on its own or with cherry cola.

While the drink fell out of popularity for a short while in the late 20th century, whisky has recently overtaken vodka as the UK’s most popular spirit and most local pubs will offer a good selection of malts and blends. The Naked Grouse Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is just plan good. It’s sippable, it’s mixable, it’s not too sweet and has a nice profile veteran drinkers can easily enjoy yet it’s 100% approachable for those venturing into the world of Scotch. It’s not incredibly complex, but what’s there is delivered with a warming richness that far exceeds expectations. I love it.
