Assessing a hernia My baby is finding it hard to breathe ו My baby is finding it hard to breathe – babies under 3 months (Easy Read RAG) If you notice a new lump in your child’s groin, you will need to seek medical assistance. If your child is happy, feeding well, pooing normally and the lump doesn’t appear to be painful you can make an appointment with your GP. They will refer you to see a paediatric surgeon. See a GP if you think you have a hernia. They may refer you to hospital for surgical treatment, if necessary. During pregnancy, all babies have an area called the inguinal canal. This goes from the abdomen to the genitals. In boys, this canal lets the testicles move from the belly to the scrotum, the sac that holds the testicles. Normally, a baby’s inguinal canal closes shortly before or after birth. But in some cases the canal doesn’t fully close. Then a loop of intestine can move into the inguinal canal through the weak spot in the belly wall. This causes an inguinal hernia. Most inguinal hernias happen in boys.

A hernia usually develops between your chest and hips. In many cases, it causes no or very few symptoms, although you may notice a swelling or lump in your tummy (abdomen) or groin. This is the most common type of hernia and it mainly affects men. It's often associated with ageing and repeated strain on the tummy. Femoral hernias If your child is over 3 and you notice an umbilical hernia, but they are well, feeding well, with no pain over the hernia, arrange an appointment to see your GP. They will refer you to see the Paediatric Surgical team in clinic. When should I worry: It's not exactly clear what causes hiatus hernias, but it may be the result of the diaphragm becoming weak with age or pressure on the tummy. Other types of hernia muscle hernias – where part of the muscle pokes through the tissue; they commonly occur in leg muscles as a result of a sports injury

The opening for the umbilical cord continues to close after a baby is born so may not need treatment. If an umbilical hernia is still present by the time a child is three years old, an operation to repair it will usually be suggested. Epigastric hernias are usually repaired only if they are causing discomfort or getting in the way of normal everyday life and activities.

I think the only thing that I would have done differently is bought two belts. After wearing the belt for several hours, it became very sweaty. It would have been nice to have two belts so that I could wash one while she was wearing the other. Other than that, I’m completely sold and I would recommend an umbilical belt to anyone whose baby has an umbilical hernia. This type of hernia happens more often in the right groin area than in the left. But it can occur on either side. Umbilical herniasAs an unborn baby develops during pregnancy, there is a small opening in the abdominal muscles. After birth, this opening closes. But sometimes, these muscles don’t fully close. A small opening is left. A loop of intestine can then move into the opening between the belly muscles. This causes an umbilical hernia. Which children are at risk for a hernia? This type of hernia can occur in babies if the opening in the tummy that the umbilical cord passes through does not seal properly after birth. the content of your hernia – if the hernia contains a part of your bowel, muscle or other tissue, there may be a risk of strangulation or obstruction

We advise that your child wears loose fitting clothes for a few days after the operation. Denim trousers, for example, can rub on the wound and make it sore. Umbilical hernias are common in newborns and infants younger than six months. Symptoms of umbilical hernia include: The spot becomes larger and harder when the baby cries, coughs, or strains, due to the increase of pressure on the abdomen If your child is under 3 and you notice an umbilical hernia, no action may be required. If they are feeding well, opening their bowels and have no pain over the lump, you can just monitor it at home. Part of the normal development that happens when a baby is in the womb is the closure of the abdominal muscles just below the navel, forming what is known as the umbilical ring. Sometimes, the muscles don’t come together completely and a small hole remains. After birth, the intestines can push through the opening, causing an umbilical hernia.Children who have surgery for an umbilical hernia may be able to go home the same day.
