Hydrasynth is a great end user product and built better than anything else I own in the high-end synth offerings. It is disappointing how other well established synth manufactures have compromised the integrity of their product using light weight plastic construction materials that wont hold up as good as the Hydrasynth in constant transport. Finally, the Modulation Matrix offers 32 user-definable modulation routings are available for you to bridge 29 modulation sources and 155 modulation destinations. This is incredible because you can achieve effects played by one hand that can sound like a melody and accompaniment in one – all the while your other hand is free). While we are talking performance controls, let's look at the unique paddle-style pitch and mod wheels. The paddles are clever and add a more nuanced method of moving the wheels. The second filter is a 12dB state-variable design with smooth morphing between low-pass, band-pass and high-pass modes. Potential uses include shaving the excesses from the first filter or, when connected in parallel, applying completely different filtering to selected sources. Ashun Sound Machines introduces Hydrasynth, the eight-voice polyphonic wave-morphing synthesizer with three oscillators per voice, seemingly endless amount of modulation options, and many other unique features such as Mutators. Besides traditional analog modeling, oscillators 1 and 2 sport a Wavescanning feature, which allows you to smoothly scan through hundreds of waveshapes at will. Mutators open up potential for ever more extreme sound shaping with PWM, FM, and more. Then there are two filters: a twelve algorithm multimode, and a classic state-variable 12dB/oct, which can be routed in parallel, and in series. Hydrasynth also has a ton of effects, from Delays to Reverbs to Flangers, and much more. It's fast and logical: you select a module to work on and tweak the parameters with LED-ringed encoders. Indeed, it's possible to get so fixated on the encoders you entirely forget the dedicated controls. Incidentally, all controls send and respond to NRPNs, rather than the lower-resolution CCs. The resulting parameter changes are smooth and not constrained to 128 possible values. However, NRPNs aren't a perfect fit for step sequencing or generic controller duties, for example, while some expected CCs are ignored, such as CC7 (volume). Filter 1 has 16 different models ranging from 1 to 8 poles, many with high-, band-, and low pass options. There is also a flexible vocal filter with formant control. Even if Filter 1 were the only filter the Hydrasynth had, it would take a lifetime to exhaust the possibilities.The modulation section is equipped with a comprehensive Mod Matrix, five LFOs, and five loopable DAHDSR envelopes with definable Curve and BPM value for each segment. Eight assignable Macros can be used for advanced control over multiple parameters. Although creating new sounds on Hydrasynth is very intuitive, the synth also features a Randomizer that can be applied as to individual modules, as well as to the whole patch itself. The problem about buying a machine like this is that it raises the bar so high that you need to go to Iridium/Kyra territory to be impressed. When scrolling through the waveforms, it's easy to notice that a number of them have rather complex shapes. Upper harmonics manifest as higher frequency waveforms themselves, and depending on the distribution of partials may cluster together into dense, noisy timbres or appear as discrete, discernible tones. At the extremes, the highest harmonics add sparkle on top of the more tonal portions of the waveform, but by tuning down the fundamental frequency of the oscillators into sub-audio territories, what was once textural becomes the primary component of a sound. Of course, should the lower harmonics still be somewhat audible, lightly applying a highpass filter to your patch will clean up the low-end rumbles. With the keyboard version of the Hydrasynth, you get a 49-note keybed with polyphonic aftertouch. Not only is this is an excellent synth for connecting to external controllers and sequencers; it’s an all-encompassing performance instrument in its own right.
