There is always this dialectic when you start a meaningful book; between the book, its contents and concepts and the author and their life/lives. And you cannot get away from this with Jelinek precisely because she IS controversial. Much is made of this in German-speaking Europe. But outside of that she appears to be little known or appraised even by the chattering classes that might be considered the clientele for her books. And this is even the case after being awarded the Nobel Laureate for Literature in 2004. A cursory look at her Wiki entry makes you begin to throw up the hands in a ‘Whoaa!’ moment. Dominant pushy mother (shades of The Piano Teacher there), severe anxiety overcome through writing, political involvement and awareness, committed feminist. on reality TV shows:] “…where people pour out their being and then don’t want to wipe it up afterwards.”

In “King of Greed” by Ana Huang, readers are immersed in a world where ambition knows no bounds, and love teeters on the edge of collapse. Dominic Davenport, a man who clawed his way to the summit of Wall Street, seemingly has it all: wealth, a lavish lifestyle, and the beautiful Alessandra, his devoted wife. Yet, behind this façade of success lies an insatiable hunger for more, an addiction to ambition that threatens to unravel the very fabric of his life. Inspired by Last Man in Tower, we’ve put together a list of exciting, discussion-worthy books about greed and the human condition. I’ll give you an example of the writing style, if you sign up to read this. This passage is when the policeman brings the underage girl into the home of the older woman:

Aravind Adiga’s follow-up to The White Tiger is a stunning novel set in contemporary Mumbai. Last Man in Tower is the story of two men poised for a showdown: real estate developer Dharmen Shah, who rose from nothing to create an empire, and schoolteacher Masterji, the only man standing in the way of Shah’s new luxury building. Although Masterji has the moral high ground, Shah is a dangerous man to refuse—and with the buyout deadline looming, Masterji’s neighbors are beginning to turn against him.

They long seem blind to just how terrible Janisch is -- or are attracted to that uniformed symbol of power from which they naturally expect abuse -- and while that seems ridiculously exaggerated it does allow Jelinek to ultimately present something of a shift. On to the story: I’ll use the book blurb so I don’t give much away (Not that there is much more to the plot than what is here): “Greed is the story of Kurt Janisch, an ambitious but frustrated country policeman, and the lonely women he seduces. It is a thriller set amid the mountains and small towns of southern Austria, where the investigation of a dead girl's body in a lake leads to the discovery of more than a single crime. In her signature style, Jelinek chronicles the exploitative nature of relations between men and women, and the cruelties of everyday life.”

Greed (Jelinek novel) - Wikipedia

There is a playfulness to some of it, and Jelinek relies on some of the clichés and clichéd expression of popular fiction for effect, but the mélange that is Greed is much more and messier than just this. Der Brite dagegen „stream of consciousness“. - Wilfred Schiltknecht, Le TempsGreed is heavy with hints of other books. But Jelinek is relentless. Hers is a world where, time and again, authority is allowed, too easily, to seduce; a society that needs its men to be aggressors and its women their willing dupes, and where human relationships are merely transactions in an economy built on exploitation and greed. There is no escape. (...) Martin Chalmers has made a brave, and on the whole effective, job of rendering into English a narrative that is characterized by stylistic unpredictability and manic shifts of register." - Ian Brunskill, Times Literary Supplement The masochistic part of this, I think what the author has been criticized for, is the self-abasing attitude of the women who accede to the advances of the policeman. He’s tall, blond, blue-eyed. They are older, losing their good looks, and desperate for company to fight off loneliness.
