This is a really interesting take on the traditional tale, and I felt that it was quite intriguing to change the time period to the 1920's, and revolve the events around a different setting. However, I do feel that the ending of the text was somewhat anti-climatic and did not give a reasonable explanation for Snow White's revival. I had been really enjoying the twist up until then. Actually I came across this book while I was browsing something else, and the summary intrigued me. Snow White isn't a favorite fairy tale of mine (that honor goes to Beauty and the Beast), so to see it combined with a historical period I am extremely interested in??? HELL YEAH Those who reviewed the 1902 Macbeth Gallery exhibition evidently did not single out Snow in New York for discussion, but they did react to Henri’s bold technique. Arthur Hoeber complained that “not infrequently Mr. Henri leaves off where the real difficulties of picture-making begin.” [5] [5]

I liked some things about the art, but the smudgy drawing style sometimes made it hard to see what was going on. The setting was fine, but again, very dingy and sort of repetitive. Personally, this book would only be suitable in older classrooms, and even then I'm not sure it is the most appropriate.

I was excited to receive this book (I won it in an Armchair BEA giveaway so no pressure to review), because I have grown to love the graphical novel media and who doesn't like fairy tales reinterpreted? Fiona French’s iconic re-imagining of a classic fairy tale, with stunning Art Deco illustrations, won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1986. I was convinced for about 2/3rds of this book that it would be a 3-star read, but it won me over in the end. Library book - okay, full disclosure. This was a "for Mama" book, not a "for Charlotte" book. It's an Art Deco-style illustrated Snow White tale. It's still a little over Charlotte's head, but I really enjoyed it. Charlotte leafed through it a few times. Williams, William James. A Heritage of American Paintings from the National Gallery of Art. New York, 1981: color repro. 167, 199, 201.pure and delightful self indulgence . . . done with tremendous style and an unfailing sense of period.' ( Junior Bookshelf) An illustrated collection of fifteen tales from the brothers Grimm, retold for younger readers. Stories include Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, Tom Thumb and The Frog PrincE. For an interesting comparison, see Manet’s Effect of Snow on Petit-Montrouge, 1870, oil on canvas, National Museum Cardiff. The gloomy ambience, enlivened by only a few touches of red, is indicative of the artist’s essentially realist proclivities. Because of its literal objectivity, Snow in New York has traditionally been interpreted by art historians as exemplifying Henri’s penchant for matter-of-fact reportage of urban subjects. Such a view is reflected in Milton W. Brown’s characterization of it as “a paradigm of the new realism in American painting of the turn of the century that became known as the Ashcan school.” [8] [8]

I really liked the illustrations in this, they were beautiful and very film noir which I’ve never seen in a graphic novel before. Although I don’t read a lot of graphic novels so that may be why…This is a very short illustrated picture book in which the tale of Snow White is relocated to 1920’s New York, (think Great Gatsby era) and the illustrations are absolutely fantastic.
