The monitor also has what AOC calls LowBlue Mode, which adjusts color temperatures on the display to reduce blue light. Certain wavelengths of blue light that are commonly produced by monitors and other glowing displays have been linked to eyestrain, insomnia and even age-related macular degeneration. Automatic color tweaks seem like a simple way to avoid some of this potential damage. It’s also easy to shift around on your desk – if you need to feng shui things to make way for a steaming mug of coffee, or to make room for your cat that just leapt up to try to ‘help’ with your review. For a better option, consider the Asus ZenScreen MB16AC, which is also a bit dim but offers better image quality overall, decent stand options and superior controls.

The AOC I1601FWUX doesn’t support HDR. That’s good news. A few monitors in the same price range claim HDR support, but don’t be fooled—they offer little more than the ability to accept an HDR signal and don’t offer a passable HDR experience. AOC’s decision to keep HDR off the feature list is an honest, accurate representation of the monitor’s capabilities. AOC I1601FWUX: Motion Performance We love this portable monitor from AOC. It does so much right; it’s light, portable, simple to set up and the display itself is lovely to look at. The AOC I1601FWUX has a single USB-C input that supports DisplayPort Alternate mode. This bundles USB-C, DisplayPort connectivity, and USB Power Delivery, offering a one-cable connection. That’s a useful advantage over older portable monitors, which often have separate video and power inputs. If you aren’t getting a signal to your AOC monitor, it could be that your computer is actually ignoring the graphics output from your PC or it is sending them elsewhere. If this is the case, the monitor is trying to pull information from a place where there is none or the information is going to a place where it cannot be displayed.Recorded sRGB coverage was 53.80% – again, not even close to good. A decent monitor will reach around 75% of the sRGB colour gamut in tests and, ideally, will exceed 80%.

If there is a solid complaint, it would be the "case" that comes with the device. This is essentially a cover that protects the front of the display when you are carrying it around but also doubles as a stand. It folds and has magnetic sections that latch on to the screen. Now, your ability to use the monitor relies on the quality of this stand and sadly it just isn't all that good. It ONLY has 1 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5Gbps signaling rate port which does NOT support Alt mode nor Power Delivery. You can NOT use it to Most display monitors will have multiple input options, including the DVI input, HDMI cord, and the VGA. This allows you to filter images from multiple devices to one display. For example, you may feed the monitor using a gaming console and a PC tower. If this is the case, you need to ensure that you have the settings correct for your monitor. Switch to the correct source. Connecting the display is dead simple, thanks to the USB Type-C connection. Plug in the single cable, connecting the monitor to the laptop, and you're pretty much done. Press the power button to turn it on, and the automatic driver installation takes care of the rest. During our testing, we used the display with a Dell Latitude 7389 2-in-1 laptop, the HP Chromebook 13 G1 and the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Touch Bar). In every instance, the display connected easily and worked without any additional driver installation or setup. If you have worked through the other fixes and you are still getting a no signal message, then you need to try something a little more on the hardware side of things. You may need to try to connect your PC to a different monitor or your monitor to a different PC to see if the issues continue or if it is the combination of the two. The I1601FWUX disappoints in color accuracy, too, with a much higher color error than most monitors we’ve recently tested. I noticed that colors which should appear punchy and impactful instead shifted towards a more pastel look. Since 2004, I have worked on PCMag’s hardware team, covering at various times printers, scanners, projectors, storage, and monitors. I currently focus my testing efforts on 3D printers, pro and productivity displays, and drives and SSDs of all sorts. For these reasons, you won’t want to use the I1601FWUX for any heavy photo or video editing. But, assuming you’re working with a laptop that’s powerful enough to competently handle something like Adobe Premiere Pro anyway, your device will (hopefully) come with a decent screen. AOC took a minimalist approach to connections and controls on the I1601FWUX. On the left edge of the monitor, near the bottom, are a power button—which doubles as an onscreen display (OSD) control—and a USB-C port.

As far as viewing angles, the picture can get a little dim when not viewed straight on, but you can still get a good idea of what you are looking at on the screen, regardless of which angle you might be viewing it from. Some might have problems with a screen that has a response time of 5ms, but in my daily use which included writing, YouTube, and some light movie watching through Netflix, this wasn't an issue. Using the display on the go is not quite as simple. The slim display comes with a folding magnetic cover that does double duty as a display cover for storage and a stand for portable use.

Portable monitors occupy a very specific corner of the market. Their pitched at hot-deskers, mobile workers, freelancers and some students – basically anyone who needs a bit of extra screen acreage wherever it is they’re working that day. We have no complaints about the performance of I1601P’s 15.6-inch full-HD IPS display. It’s crisp, responsive and easy on the eye. Overdrive is set to ‘off’ as standard, and for much of the time you’ll probably want to leave it that way. Ghosting – that unsightly blur caused by fast-moving objects on digital displays – was very noticeable on this video , but we found that bumping up the I1601FWUX to its medium overdrive setting mitigated this. Contrast ratio is 565:1, which isn’t ideal. Generally, a decent level of contrast for an IPS monitor is anything close to 1000:1 or higher, so this is way off the mark. This is particularly noticeable when watching videos where there’s plenty of dark areas or high levels of contrast – live music videos being a good example. As we said above, you can get around this somewhat by upping contrast and overdrive, but it still isn’t perfect. The refresh rate is only 60Hz, limiting its performance as a gaming monitor, but that was never AOC’s intention. For anything a regular office worker might want to do, 60Hz is absolutely fine. There were real problems with posterization; color gradients separated into distinct blobs of color on-screen. The AOC I1601FWUX won’t wow you with its image quality, but it feels more premium than the price tag suggests. It’s great value for money for workers who need something they can sling into their bag at a moment’s notice. Just make sure you’ve invested in a laptop bag with plenty of padding. Verdict The monitor reached a maximum brightness of 228 nits, which is a hair above the promised peak brightness of 220 nits. That’s a modest level of brightness for a modern monitor, though typical at this price point.
