Description

The subject matter is uncomfortable and at times heartbreaking, and listening to what the “inmates” of Ambergate had to endure during the 50’s was at times unbearable and barbaric, but the author had obviously researched this subject thoroughly which ensured a level of sensitivity and empathy throughout. Kathryn Hughes writes beautifully. The narrative just flows as you find yourself getting so caught up in the story. We all have heard the stories of the old institutions and how folk were left in these places and forgotten about for years, many times only leaving in a coffin. Thankfully the attitude to mental health has made huge advances over the years but we must always remember that it wasn’t that long ago when life in these places was a traumatic experience for most involved. Gulping deep breaths, Ethan falls to the ground. In a moment of madness he grabs hold of the arrow with two hands and rips it screaming out of her chest. Everyone gasps and looks away. Given the subject matter and how the story revolves around it so much, it tells you just how much research the author must have done, all of which definitely paid off.

Like every MacLean book, you have a sort of 'everyman' anti-hero caught up in a dangerous, thrilling situation. Of course this man is more than he seems and this will come out as the story progresses. In the prologue to this story, a small cargo aircraft carrying cargo (of some value it seems) from Colombia to Florida is shot down by a fighter jet. This is witnessed (via radio communication) by the partner (and pilot's brother) of the cargo business. Also on board is the wife and child of the man witnessing the event.

The story in itself was entertaining and full of action, but I despise this book with all my heart because of the ending. Ethan: There's really not much you can do with Ethan in this last chapter. Maybe a conversation between him and Isabel or him and Matt and what he's feeling.

the Key by Ruth Explanation, Summary + Review: The Turn of the Key by Ruth

Fifty years later and Sarah is fascinated by the now abandoned Ambergate Asylum near her home. Working in the local library gives Sarah access to carrying out research for a book she is writing about the hospital, but for Sarah, the only real research comes from exploring the premises. Her mother has recently passed away and Sarah is living with her Dad for the time being. He is not happy with Sarah’s investigation into Ambergate and advises her to leave the past alone but Sarah is unable to do this. The title of the book does not go with the content of the book. When we read such a title, we expect something big that can be termed as the Master Key but no such content was there in the book. There are many other books on this topic that have the same content presented in a better way. With a better structure, better layout, better language. Except for a few things like the solar plexus, the book does not have something different to offer. It isn't all doom and gloom, there are tender moments and a mystery to the plot which reaches a satisfying ending. Can't wait to read more from this author.Well, I love a great dual timeline story, and one with a subject matter that fascinates me is even better! Kuom man ši knyga pasirodė ypatingą?
