Next, the speaker refers to the “fools” with their “silks” and “knaves” with their “wine.” He is questioning the fact that these are the factors of modern life that are deemed valuable. The world says a man is a man for “a’ that,” or the possession he owns. To the speaker, this is very much not the case. A man is a man when he is “honest,” even, and especially, if he is poor. This type of man is the “king o’ men for a’ that.” When you’re dishonest with yourself, you’re disconnected from reality. You’re going to make poor decisions. You’re going to drop out of the moment and you’re going to be less happy and you’re going to be wrong. Naval Ravikant https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/emotional-fitness/201103/10-ways-feel-better-about-yourself Maybe you always hoped to have published that debut novel by the time you turned 30, a goal that's no closer now than it was 5 years ago. Maybe you know you need to get in shape, but find it easier to keep up the same old routine. Maybe your relationship is stale and you're unhappy in it, but can't bring yourself to make any considerable changes. Political assassinations, covert operations and domestic surveillance finally received scrutiny and oversight. A plot to kill Fidel Castro, with an assist from organized crime, made headlines. So did the personal ties that bound John F Kennedy, mob boss Sam Giancana and their shared mistress, Judith Campbell Exner.

Honest people don’t exaggerate, they only say what is true. They are honest about their own feelings and refuse to stretch the truth for attention or sympathy. The function and duty of a human being, a “quality” human being, that is, is the sincere and honest development of potential and self-actualization. Bruce Lee Honest people will always be honest about who they are and how they feel inside. They don’t hide behind excuses or blame other people for their mistakes, they take responsibility and hold themselves accountable. If one would give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I would find something in them to have him hanged. For decades … the CIA’s operations faced only glancing scrutiny from the White House, and virtually none from Congress,” Risen writes. “True oversight would have to wait until 1975, and the arrival on the national stage of a senator from Idaho, Frank Church.”Confront the things about yourself that you dislike. A big source of dishonesty in our lives comes from an unwillingness to confront the things about ourselves that we're ashamed of, embarrassed about, or just plain disgusted by. Without dwelling on them, try to define them honestly.

When you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice, you may know that your society is doomed. Ayn Rand The Last Honest Man also doubles as a guide to high-stakes politics. Risen captures Gary Hart and the late Walter Mondale on the record. Both Democratic presidential hopefuls – Mondale the candidate in 1984, Hart the frontrunner, briefly, in the 1988 race – after sitting on Church’s committee. The three senators were competitors and colleagues. Paths and ambitions intersected. Laërtius, Diogenes; Plutarch (1979). Herakleitos & Diogenes. Translated by Guy Davenport. Bolinas, California: Grey Fox Press. ISBN 978-0-912516-36-3. Elsewhere on the island, 12-year-old Lyman Rankin seeks shelter from his alcoholic father in an abandoned house only to discover that he is not alone. A mysterious woman greets him with a hatchet and a promise: “Make a sound and I’ll kill you.” Stay silent if you need to. If you're in a tense situation, in which getting honest would disrupt everyone's mood and happiness, it's not necessarily dishonest to remain silent. If you've got the option of staying out of it, stay out of it. It takes courage to stay silent in an awkward situation sometimes.Laërtius 1925, §20). A trapezites was a banker/money-changer who could exchange currency, arrange loans, and was sometimes entrusted with the minting of currency. The truth is the only thing worth having, and, in a civilized life, like ours, where so many risks are removed, facing it is almost the only courageous thing left to do. E.V. Lucas

Epitaph on my own Friend - Scottish Poetry Library

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth. Oscar WildeThe poem begins with the speaker describing how man’s value is not contained in how much he owns or how he acts. It comes from somewhere deeper. The speaker believes that honesty is much more important to one’s worth than clothes or which foods a man eats. This is expanded so that the principle can take down princes and lords from their high position. They are “coof,” or foolish and the independently minded man is elevated above them. In conclusion, the speaker expresses his hope that one day the world will change and all men will “Brothers be.” One day, society will rid itself of its hierarchical class structure. Democratic politician Frank Church (1924-1984), who was elected to the U.S. Senate before Idaho became a solidly Republican state, displayed a natural ability to maneuver through the knotty landscape of politics. As two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning political journalist Risen writes, he didn’t mind making enemies in the absence of allies: “Frank Church was a loner in the Senate…and didn’t go out of his way to cultivate close ties.” A strong supporter of John F. Kennedy, he went up against Lyndon Johnson on a number of key issues. Though he endorsed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (and later regretted it), he proved a stalwart opponent of the Vietnam War. He came to equate that war with a covert program of American imperialism, and after helping conduct the Watergate inquiries, he formed a Senate committee that exposed the nefarious activities of the intelligence community, including the CIA’s alliance with the Mafia in an effort to assassinate Fidel Castro and its connection to many other killings—perhaps even JFK’s. Woven into Risen’s story are the still-unsolved murders of Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana and a made-man foot soldier, both of whom supplied the Church Committee with information. Church also examined presidents’ use of emergency powers to advance their agendas; in this as well as other discoveries of his committee, he arrived at “a difficult question: was the disgraced Richard Nixon really that different from his predecessors in the White House?” The answer is debatable, but Risen credits Church with preventing the rise of the deep state, which “remains a myth, a right-wing conspiracy theory,” precisely “because Frank Church brought the intelligence community fully into the American system of government.” Burns is known for his use of Scottish dialect, a style of writing that is evident throughout the text of the poem. In fact, the title “for a’ that” comes from a Jacobite song published in the mid-1750s. While a number of these phrases, such as the title itself, can be hard to understand, reading aloud often clears up the meaning. Honesty is an active verb, not a passive noun. Go out of your way to be truthful, beginning with the things that you say to yourself. Joe Tye
