About this deal

You are room service, the bellman, the front desk, their personal attendants, their laundress (washing clothes), sometimes their masseuse, taxi driver, waiter, chef, etc. Get the point? The Racing Fleet demonstrate another aspect of the Working Boat and with their speed, grace and excitement provide a colourful and spectacular sight during the racing season. If you are flying into the country to join a boat you’ve already been hired for, the Captain will help you arrange all necessary B1/B2 visas for America, or whatever country, which you’ll show at customs. I initially worked as a stewardess, then began taking jobs as a chef after cooking courses at the Culinary Institute of America, to increase my earning potential. The term ‘Falmouth Working Boat’ is fairly recent and mainly applies now to the boats that race during the summer months. These versatile craft, originally given the name ‘Truro River Oyster Dredging Boats’, took their name from the occupation they were used for and the area in which it took place.

But if you can fit the persona of a servant when guests or owners are on board (which is usually only 2-8 weeks per year), and you can clean like a maniac, you will make great income traveling the world on mega yachts. Living The Yachting Life It’s a long hard run of working when you’re on charter. However, if the guests are not the owners of the yacht, often there will be a decent tip at the end of the trip. Between Charters Being on charter means you don’t leave the boat, you can’t drink alcohol, you keep to your work duties, and otherwise stay inside your cabin. Evelyn was built in 1898 on the beach at Yard Point on the Restronguet Creek by Frank Hitchens, a master shipwright, with the assistance of his son Tom. Another son, James Hitchens a fisherman, had a daughter called Evelyn and it was after her that the boat was named. They have a large mainsail, a stay sail and a jib sail. For the working boats involved in dredging the sail area needs to be limited and is usually around 300 square feet and less than 500 square feet but for the racing boats the sail area is dramatically increased. On these boats there may be up to 1,000 square feet of sail and brightly coloured topsails.Originally boats were of wooden construction and some of the older wooden boats still survive and have been restored. Newer boats use modern materials such as fibreglass but continue to use the basic hull form and traditional rig. Many boats are still used for dredging whilst others have been acquired solely for racing. Hand dredging by sail or oars has preserved the oyster banks, the methods of working and the design of the vessels. This fleet of boats which race regularly, is smaller than the working boat fleet. They are of mixed origin and age and six, such as Evelyn and Winnie, are older wooden boats. Although Workboats are made by 17 manufacturers, the best Workboats are undoubtedly made by: Custom, Commercial, other, Bulldog

In 1935 Evelyn was sold and for the next 30 years she had various owners along the coast who used her for fishing and recreational purposes with additions such as the fitting of a marine engine, a coachroof with cooking stove, a single bunk and heads.

Most yachts have a chef, and they are well paid, but you will need some prior cooking knowledge & skills. The larger the yacht, the more formal the expectations and entry requirements will be (like experience cooking at high-end restaurants or a cooking degree). Other Positions You don’t have to pay rent when you work & live on boats, and your food is included too, so you can really save a lot of money. But many yachties get lost in the endless party lifestyle and waste their income. Both old and new boats still work in oyster fishing or compete in the racing aspect of these traditional sailing vessels. At various times of the year Working Boats can be seen in the Fal Estuary either providing views of the practicality of oyster dredging or the excitement of racing. It is the combination of both tradition and innovation which will continue to ensure future sustainability and the preservation of the Working Boats of the Fal. In the long standing tradition of shared boat ownership, there are thirty two Syndicate shares, but with some shares having been divided into half shares, there are 40 Syndicate members today. One of those members is Malcolm Hitchens, the Great-Great-Grandson of Frank Hitchens, the master shipwright who built Evelyn in 1898. Each member pays an annual subscription to pay for maintenance to keep Evelyn in good racing condition throughout the season. The Syndicate is managed by an elected committee of members who take responsibility for appointing skippers and ensuring that there are sufficient funds to provide for Evelyn’s upkeep. There is now a new chapter in Evelyn’s long life. Past and Present Today, my friend Katie shares her experience working on yachts, along with tips on how to find yacht jobs. It’s a cool way to earn money traveling the world! Here’s Katie:

There are only a handful of international yachting hubs, and if you want a job, you need to spend time in one of these locations. Ideally 1-2 months. Winter Season: The Caribbean There are 33 on Boatshop24 UK at the moment, most of which are in United Kingdom. The boats range from 1930 to 2024, with 9 new vessels and 24 used boats currently on offer. Boatshop24 UK also has wooden, aluminium and steel boats for sale. Which manufacturers make the best Workboats? I’ve met quite a few “yachties” during my travels. People who work as yacht & sailboat crewmembers for a living. Ft. Lauderdale is a decent place to look for work in the winter, but if you don’t have a job by December and want a change of scenery, you can fly down to English Harbour, Antigua or Simpson Bay, St. Maarten (a larger community) and you might be able to snag a job for a holiday trip. Summer Season: Mediterranean & New England STCW’2010 (previously STCW‘95) is not a regulatory requirement to work on yachts, but it’s becoming an un-official requirement from Captains and owners for safety and insurance reasons. The center of the Mediterranean yachting industry is Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Antibes, France is also a hub for sailboats, but it’s a bit smaller. The team's real passion has always been sharing their love of narrowboats with the public, bringing the history of our canals to life through stories, boat tours and trips. “You get a real mix,” says Joan, “lots of families and children, people who were born and brought up on boats, and others who've never set foot on a boat before in their life.” When the yacht owners are on-board, or other people have chartered (aka rented) out your boat for a holiday, you are “on charter.” But if you can handle the workload, you’ll return with great memories, new friends, and a fat savings account. ★ What is day work? Work one day, get paid in cash. Simple. It’s a great way to earn a bit of extra cash and network with other yachties! Day work can often turn into a full-time crew position.

Location is everything in this business. Yachts move around the globe seasonally like migrating birds, chasing the best weather. You don’t actually have to be a sailor to work on a sailing yacht (especially if you work the interior), but you have to be willing to learn.Eventually, I also got my Captain’s License and Master of Yachts 200T certification with a sailing endorsement. So this is an industry I know very well!
