The mildest tasting carrots are white varieties. Purple varieties boast the strongest flavors. White carrots

Around 1530 was the first mention of the word “carrot” in English. This was borrowed from the French word “carrotte” and from the Latin “carota.” Carrots and parsnips were not clearly distinguished in English due to their similar appearances (because carrots were more yellow or white then). Both carrots and parsnips were simply called “more” or “moru” (from the word “mork,” meaning edible root). During the Arab expansion into Europe, cultivated carrots were brought to the area of Andalusia (Spain). From Spain, carrot cultivation spread into the rest of northern Europe. The first carrots that were brought over to Europe were either purple or a mutant of the purple carrot that appeared yellow. The carrots were purple because they contained high amounts of anthocyanins, a pigment compound touted today for its antioxidant properties. Step 2: Determine the spacing – Since they don’t require a ton of space, you can plant your carrot seeds 1″ apart. Or, if you prefer, you can just scatter them in rows, and thin them out later. Jaune du Doubs (72 days)– An heirloom variety, Jaune de Doubs is a good choice for spring or fall harvesting. The slender, tapered roots grow 5 to 7” long and have bright yellow skin and interiors. Some roots may have green shoulders. The flavor is mild when raw and sweeter when cooked. Carrot flavor is enhanced by herbs like spearmint, marjoram, bay leaf, thyme, grated ginger, chives, dill, or parsley. Carrots can be sweetened using honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar. The plant produces a large, single (ideally), fleshy taproot. Carrot roots can be short and wide or long and tapered. This depends greatly on the variety and various soil characteristics. Propagation Seeding carrots directly into the garden is the best way to propagate this root vegetable.

When sowing fresh carrot seeds, you can plant one per hole. But if you’re using old seeds, place 2-3 per hole, and thin them later. How deep do you plant carrot seeds? Sow thinly from mid March until the end of May direct into well prepared, warm, weed free soil at a depth of 13mm ( 1?2") (Germination 14-21 days). Thin by degrees to a final spacing of 7.5cm (3") between plants and 30-45cm (12-18") between rows. Use the thinning for salad carrots. Carrots grow best in a sunny position in well cultivated soil which has not recently been manured. Carrots can be preserved in many ways, which is why they’ve been, and have remained, such an excellent addition to the home vegetable garden. They can be stored in the refrigerator after washing. Carrots will lose moisture in most refrigerators because the humidity is relatively low. Store the carrots in a plastic bag or in the high humidity drawer of your refrigerator. A delightful blend of five different colored carrots all suitable for growth as gourmet baby veggies or full-sized mature roots, our Rainbow Carrot Blend is a treat for every garden. Plant a nice big patch of these beauties and have fun at harvest time discovering the colors you have grown.

Carrots have been a staple crop in the human diet for centuries! They’re nutritious, filling, and they’re easy to store for long periods of time, so it’s no wonder why they have such a rich history of cultivation. Yellowbunch (75 days)– This is an Imperator-type carrot with narrow, tapered roots that are bright sunflower-yellow in color. They can grow up to 9 inches in length, but are only around an inch across at the shoulders. Plant in deep, loose soil for the longest, straightest roots.

Time: By using the oven time wisely, you can prepare the different elements simultaneously. All you need is about 45 minutes. Ingredients

Pearl couscous: Also known as Israeli couscous, pearl couscous is made from semolina and is shaped into tiny balls, toasted and then simmered to eat. It is larger in size than couscous and is chewier in texture.
