I hate greys but I love greys... I own far too many greys because it's so hard to guess what a grey will look like until you've painted it on a model (in terms of is it slightly warmish, slightly coolish, slightly purplish, slightly greenish, etc). I usually buy a grey, paint it, decide it's not what I wanted and it gets thrown in my pile-of-paints-I-barely-use, lol. These bases look fantastic when I get to play on my own terrain, and even when I’m not using it the matching color splashes across the army ties everything together nicely. Here’s an interesting point I learned the hard way. The more paints you use, the more you’ll realize how few paints are necessary. As Oliver Wendell Holmes, a US Supreme Court Justice once said, “For thesimplicitythat lies thisside of complexity, I would notgive a fig, but for thesimplicitythat lies on the otherside of complexity, I wouldgivemy life.” In other words, your understanding of simplicity only comes after fully experiencing complexity. Agrellan Earth and the other technical texture base paints are nearly foolproof. For new miniature painters starting in the hobby, this is as close to plug-and-play as you’ll get. You don’t even have to paint over the base surface when it’s dry.

Roads are an integral part of the urban environment and great for showing scale. On some of my larger bases, particularly Chaos Knights, I add torn-up roads to both create more of an urban feel and also give the model a sense of scale.

Rakarth Flesh is another base color that provides you with many versatile applications. Start with this color as a basecoat or use it as a highlight layer paint. Solid opaque coverage can be had in 1-2 coats. A small bit of water will help it flow off your brush. I use this paint color for lighter skin tones, for painting parchment papers (e.g., purity seals, anyone?), and as a dry brush highlight color over browns and dark grays that you may often find on model bases or terrain bits. This is a lovely paint that I recommend for its many uses. Bugman’s Glow Similarly, you can probably get in some variation on the woods for the muskets, which are the next step. They tend to be fairly flat on most models, so I generally painted the wood a solid color and left them be. The metallics I kept pretty plain, as I didn’t want to make them look too parade-ground polished. There are some brass details here as well, which you’ll find on the basket hilts of the swords as well as in some details on the musket. For the next step I use Coeilia Greenshade mixed with Lahmian Medium to add a nice touch of blue green to the lion’s mane and tail. The green in this excellent paint adds some range of color to the model to avoid being monotone greys and blues. In the end it helps to create a more ethereal look to the model. If say however, I was painting a White Scars Space Marine I would use Drakenhoff Darkshade/Lahmian Medium mix after using the grey which would give greater definition, but look a bit less ethereal/mystical. If was painting a Luna Wolf I may go for Russ Grey for grittier more muted approach all round.

The Gold Trim here is done with Retributor Armour then shaded with Agrax Earthshade before being highlighted again with Retributor and then edge highlighted in spots with Runefang Steel.

In this week’s Goonhammer Historicals we take a look at how to paint some of the most iconic uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars. Air Paints – these are airbrush-ready paints that are pre thinned for use in an airbrush and should provide you with similar color matching with layer and base paints. Here is an article with a review of Citadel Air Paints alongside other airbrush-ready paints.

In our How to Paint Everything series, we take a look at different armies of the Warhammer universe, examine their history and heraldry, and look at several different methods for painting them. In this article we’re looking at the Warmaster of Chaos in the 41st Millennium, Abaddon the Despoiler. Who is Abaddon? Now the model I’ll be showing is the matching lion to the one pictured above. So simply begin by priming the model Corax White. Hey guys Cavalier here, co-host of Splintermind the Dark Eldar podcast and commission painter for Frontline Gaming. Sharing how I’ve used the new GW white paints to paint my Shining Spears. The Belt is done with Mephiston Red and shaded with Carroburg Crimson and Nuln Oil, and highlighted in spots with Evil Sunz Scarlet. Hey guys Cavalier here, commission painter for Frontline Gaming and co-host of Splintermind the Dark Eldar podcast here today with a painting tutorial on how to paint white models! So if you like the look of this Lion of Chrace I’ll show you how I did it. Also when alongside other units in my army, it seems like it couldn’t be a brighter shade of white!
