Regarding the novel’s title, one wonders why beautyful and not beautiful? It seems probable that this has been a slip in the English spelling, which is not uncommon in Africa. In fact, in Ghana the main language is Twi and English is not as fluent as one could expect. The narrator explicitly connects his physical degradation to his shady dealings: Days before publication, however, I received an express message: someone at the publishing house had decided to substitute a different blurb for mine. I looked at it and was appalled. My blurb had been focused on the content of the book. The substitute blurb pushed the book aside and placed the author's person at the centre of attention, as if the novel were about me. There was something said about my being Harvard-educated, and having had to leave Africa because the only reality inside the continent was rot, corruption, etc. Oyo and the man travel by taxi to Koomson’s estate, and they are both in awe of the number and quality of material possessions in the home. Koomson presents himself as a king in a castle, and he produces the papers for the boat, which Oyo signs on behalf of her mother. The boat scheme does not work out, though; they do not become rich, as the mother-in-law had hoped, and only occasionally are they given some fish caught from the boat.

The inaccurate blurb from Houghton Mifflin Publishers may have misled some readers, but I suppose the majority of readers who trusted in their own judgment and read the text intelligently reached an independent assessment, pro or con.
