About this deal

As in Paris and Rome, the exhibition will be accompanied by a one-off live concert inspired by the themes explored in the exhibition, performed by the Britten Sinfonia at the Barbican on 14 October. In the final section of the exhibition visitors will also discover how the Salgados are working to protect the “other Brazilian rainforest”, the Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Forest) through the work of Instituto Terra.

The Science Museum is open Wednesday – Sunday from 10.00 until 18.00. During school holidays the museum is open seven days a week. Anavilhanas – Islands in the Stream, the archipelago between 350 and 450 islands of every ilmaginable shape emerging from the dark waters of the Rio Negro. Photographs Dedicated to Indigenous Populations Free for children up to 5 years, ICOM members with valid membership card, licensed tourist guides, persons accompanying disabled visitors, staff of the Special Projects Unit and Fabbrica del Vapore, accredited journalists with valid press card, 1 group accompanying person, teachers accompanying schools (2 per group), invitation coupon holders.

With over 200 photographs the exhibition revolves around two themes: images of landscape settings, and of indigenous peoples. Salgado’s Landscape Photographs The emotions I have felt most deeply while looking at Salgado’s work have been gratitude and wonder,” said Bierman. “There’s a whole world out there that he has devoted his life to, and through his photographs you get to travel. I get a sense of awe, wonder, and gratitude for his work.” With over 200 images, captured over 7 years spent travelling in the region, visitors will get to explore one of the most unique environments on the planet through Salgado’s eyes; That riverboat journey was an attempt – doomed as it turned out – to find the source of one of Amazônia’s rivers, as well as a chance to take photographs of riverbanks that look like huge walls of trees. But to reach his ultimate destination, the communities who live deep in the forest, Salgado needed to navigate smaller streams in narrower boats. His book contains a shot of 10 or so small vessels moored at daybreak: dark and sharply focused, they stand out from the misty, featureless landscape behind, their seats catching the morning sun and shining silver. The problems of Amazônia are well known and urgent: fires, deforestation, intrusive agriculture, roadbuilding. But Salgado – who with his wife, Lélia, has turned the family farm in Aimorés into a nature reserve that’s a model of reforestation – shows there is still much to fight for. The modern world, for all its rapacity, has only destroyed “a little bit of the periphery. The heart is there yet. To show this pristine place, I photograph Amazônia alive, not the dead Amazônia.” In the book’s foreword Salgado writes: “For me, it is the last frontier, a mysterious universe of its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the world’s largest single natural laboratory.” Manda Yawanawá, the daughter of Jeré Yawanawá, from the village of Escondido, Rio Gregório Indigenous Territory, state of Acre, Brazil, 2016. The Yawanawá community, which had only 120 members in the 1970s, has been able to rebuild itself and reconnect with the knowledge of the elders.

For Genesis I went to see what was pristine on the planet,” said Salgado. “I had previously photographed just one animal, humans, and now I went to photograph all kinds of animals. Through this work I was transformed into an environmentalist.” Although the tribes do some farming, they largely rely on hunting, fishing and gathering fruit, just like their hunter-gatherer forebears. Some of Salgado’s most startling shots show proud hunters carrying dead monkeys home to eat. Yet, he points out, they live in rhythm with nature. When a village gets too big for its ecosystem, it voluntarily splits and part of the community moves to fresh forest. Salgado admires, even envies, the balance their lifestyle allows. “There’s fish in the rivers, animals in the forest, fruit in the trees. They live so well. They have so much time to discuss, to sing, to have parties.” The exhibition is supported by Zurich Insurance Company Ltd (Principal Sponsor) and Natura &Co (Major Sponsor).
