Whether it’s part of a bathroom makeover or you need to replace an old and damaged shower, knowing how to seal a shower tray is essential. And while it may sound like a daunting task, with a little care and patience, it’s a relatively simple project too.

Step 7 - Get a kettle or jug of water and pour it down the shower drain to see that it all flows through without any drips or leaks.Using a small roller or other appropriate tool roll the seal strip so that it attaches firmly to the edge of the tray removing any bubbles or creases paying particular attention to the corners. Starting at the same place you began to apply sealant, carefully and gently smooth it out – don’t apply too much pressure and don’t keep smoothing it once you have a smooth finish as this may damage the sealant and stop it working properly. We know that not everyone has the luxury of a freestanding bath and that many modern bathroom designs will incorporate over-bath showers that also require sealing. When sealing a bath, follow the preparation advice above but remember that there is one crucial extra step you will need to take before reaching for the silicone sealant. The water in the bath acts as a weight (most baths settle slightly when filled due to the movement in flooring) and ensures that the silicone sealant will not stretch or tear when the tub is filled at bath time and the weight of a human is added. Step 8 - Cover up the gaps around the sides of the tray using either skirting boards or shower tray side panels. Allow to cure fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Usually, fresh silicone should be left to dry or cure for a minimum of 24 hours, although this depends on the brand and type of sealant. Step 2 - Ensure the riser legs are adjusted to allow an adequate fall for the waste to drain away, typically 50mm fall per metre length of pipework. Initially, it may be easier to get the tray level by adjusting the key corner legs first. And don’t forget to fit the centre leg.
