You definitely don’t need the app if it doesn’t appeal. The Roland Micro Cube is perfectly capable of standing up and making the grade on its own merits, but there’s no doubt that Cube Jam adds a new dimension. There are no effects on any of the amps in this series, but this is just as well, because very very few amps come equipped with effects worth bragging about. It is always a better option to choose a pedal, or pedals, which complement your musical stylings. Adding to the GX series’s new features like the i-CUBE Link, all this opens up many new opportunities to practice and record, providing an audio interface for working with music apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

On each effect setting, there is the option to increase (or decrease) the volume of the effect from subtle to full-on. Firstly, they’re designed to sound good at really low volumes – which makes them perfect for bedroom axe wielders practicing late at night; and (2) they’re usually battery powered and portable so you can take them anywhere – the beach; a friend’s house; the park. Have amp, will travel. Note that the app side of things is for iOS devices only. You can connect an Android device to the Micro Cube via the I-Cube Link to play music but that’s about it. The Cube Jam app is iOS only. We have no idea if Roland has any desire to develop an Android app – but don’t hold your breath. Cube Jam app

Mini guitar amps are modern marvels. Get over the fact that they’re not going to sound like a Mesa Boogie at full tilt and you’ll be able to truly appreciate just how awesome they are. The pros far outweigh the cons – but just what is target audience? We’ve already noted you get the AC adaptor and the i-Cube link cable thrown in. Oh and there’s a chromatic tuner on the top panel.

Remember you can only use one effect at a time per control knob. So you could have chorus and delay or tremolo and spring reverb, but you can’t have chorus and tremolo for example. You get the picture. The metronome is a music-student’s best friend, but that numbing “clank, clank, clank” can get irksome. That’s where the MICRO CUBE RX’s Rhythm Guide comes in handy. It’s like having a drummer inside your amp. Choose from an assortment of groovin’ patterns to practice with. Improve your timing while having a more enjoyable musical experience, or just have fun jamming along to the beats. Outputs With two specially made power amps and four speakers, the RX amp produces an immersive, stereo sound that must be heard to be believed. The true stereo engine also allows bass tones that defy the size of the cabinet. Battery Drive Depending on your situation and choice of musical genre, you may be able to use them in a band rehearsal scenario – but it’s pushing the boundary to be honest. You’re not going to be heard over an over enthusiastic drummer banging away. Added to this is the Extreme model with ultra distortion so that together with the classic British and American amp models as well as a Roland Jazz Chorus model, all musical genres from jazz to metal are covered. The effects are distributed over two pots (Modulation FX + Rev/Dly), offering all the usual, including a new Octaver and Spring Reverb. The volume output is impressive and even slightly louder than its predecessor. Thus, the power (especially with the distorted models) is not only enough for the living room but also for smaller gigs without drums. In combination with the sturdy MDF housing, the custom-designed speaker does the rest to make the manageable amount of watts look as fulminant as possible. The Roland Micro Cube GX is an awesome update to one of the world's best selling battery powered amplifiers and a real favourite here at Andertons. The portable lightweight Micro Cube GX features 8 COSM amp sounds including Extreme distortion as well a selection of sparkly clean and crunchy overdrive tones that will work for a wide range of styles. If you see a busker using an wedge-shaped amp, and you hear a great sound, they are most probably either using this amp or the discontinued Crate Limo. The Roland CUBE Street Ex is not as good tonally as a Fishman Loudbox Artist (see below), but for the price and portability you really can’t go wrong. It is light enough to carry comfortably, it’s easy to use and the wedge shape helps with projecting your sound – a sound that is both clean and natural.

The MICRO CUBE RX’s line input lets you plug in a guitar, bass, or microphone. In addition, the stereo AUX input accepts input from an iPod®, a CD player, or musical instrument so you can blend its signal with your own. Amplifier Section Rated Power Output 2.5 W + 2.5 W Nominal Input Level (1 kHz) INPUT: -10 dBu Other controls within the app include input gain and bass boost, accessible by hitting the cog button in the top right-hand corner. There’s also a nifty A/B button that lets you select a certain section of a song and repeat it over and over. Handy for mastering difficult guitar parts without having to repeat the whole song from the start. The Cube Jam App – summing up Guitarists and bassists have come to rely on Roland and BOSS for the best effects in the world. The MICRO CUBE RX benefits from this world-leading technology, offering eight built-in COSM amps, six digital effects, three band EQ, and a chromatic tuner. Immersive Stereo FXThe Roland CUBE Street is designed to be extremely versatile; it is equally at home with a folk singer as it is with a heavy metal musician. It boasts an impressive amount of amp models and effects, meaning that it is possible to perform without the need to carry many pedals with you. But conversely, there are situations where mini guitar amps REALLY come into their own. Generally, people buy these pint-sized practice amps for two main reasons: Do not be deterred by the seemingly tiny 5w power rating; this amp will handle a moderately populated street. However, despite having more projection and better sound quality than the smaller Roland Micro Cube, at a higher volume this amp loses a lot of its clarity, becoming tonally muddy.
