I applaud Broadbent's commitment to handling Oraya's trauma and upbringing, and how it impacts literally everything she says and does. She's prey who has constantly been surrounded by predators. She has a paranoid father who drills into her how vulnerable she is *to begin with* -- and therefore, why she cannot, under any circumstances, allow anyone an opening. All vulnerability under her control is to be stamped out. It was consistent and believable and sets her up for an incredible character arc over the series.

Raihn is another contestant in the Kejari. He appears to be a strong and powerful brute at first, but it’s clear that there is much more to him than meets the eye. He’s witty, and seems to be more human than the rest of the vampires. He doesn’t see humans as walking blood-bags, and he even seems to have feelings besides hunger for blood, sex, and violence. He’s trying to show Oraya that although most of the vampires are vicious predators, not all of them are, and he’s trying to prove to her that she can trust him not to hurt her.

God, these two are just so freaking hot and sexy and adorable at the same time. I loved their chemistry so much and how they hated each other so much in the start only to fall in love with each other later. They understand and cared for each other when they got hurt. Raihn always understood the complexity of Oraya while Oraya knew that Raihn may be a Vampire but his heart was always human. He cared so much for his loved ones.

She also comes to realize that Vincent might be more vicious than she thought, but she also knows that being King of the vampires is no easy task, and it comes with tough choices. As the book progresses, there are a lot of mixed feelings between the two of them, but I really liked their complex dynamic. I also love that Vincent was more than just a brutal vampire looking to use anyone and everyone, he does truly care about Oraya, and shows it in his way, although that does not excuse some of the decisions he made. But winning won't be easy amongst the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival. oraya never felt really annoying to me, though my only qualm with her would be the same trap that many fall into in writing the strong, stubborn female characters archetype. there's a lot of talk to start about hardening your heart and never letting anyone in, etc. and that's a real thing of course, but that emotional indifference that gets written in to make a point in these characters isn't real because it disappears once she meets someone she fancies or who's nice to her. *cough cough* THE ENDING

What I adored most about her character was that she reciprocated the love and compassion perfectly. She didn’t just make the guy do all the work after they both accepted that they loved/cared for each other. Their romance was so balanced and delicately handled and I JUST LOVE IT OKAY my only complaint is that i wish we had a little info dumping early on. weird to ask for, but i wanted to better understand the reason for the Hiaj/Rishan conflict. i get that bloodthirsty power thirsty beasts can just be mean to be mean but i think it would have helped me to understand the stakes more if we knew more about the differences between factions/species.
