And then the language... The book is full of similes and metaphors and repetitions for dramatic effect, and many things are left rather vague. At points I desperately wished for an additional sentence or two that would have clarified things! MADAM by Madam C. J. Walker Launches New Beauty Brand Inspired by Iconic Trailblazer." Cision PR Newswire, January 31, 2022. Davis, Wynne (August 27, 2022). "Madam C.J. Walker, the first U.S. self-made female millionaire, gets her own Barbie". NPR. Of course, since the story is well thought-out, there's a twist or two which makes the ending especially frustrating because the final "revelation" of who Mrs Walker is is not spelled out. You can guess it easily, all the crumbs of information are given to you, but the author never confirms your belief.

Disclosure: The author is my cousin once removed. I am reviewing her book to plead for it to be available in the US also. I will try to give as objective a verbal account as I can, though my position makes it impossible to give a numerical rating that will be meaningful.

I think one sign of a good novel is one that leaves us wondering at the end.... What happened next? Did this? Why that? What if the other? > Social wonder v science wonder.... < To quote Michelle Garcia Winner that great guru of "social thinking".

We all struggle sometimes; with work, friendships and our home lives and this can make us feel sad, frustrated or angry. If you ever feel like this please talk to an adult, speak to your parents /carers, form tutor or any other member of staff in school. They will know what to do, or if they don’t they will know who to ask! Laneri, Raquel (February 18, 2017). "Manse built by America's first self-made millionairess seeks new life". New York Post. Speaking of men to love, there is not a single male character in this book who is not a brazen child molester or device that provides sex. There is also a lot of paedophilia (and I mean a LOT), and as a child abuse survivor myself the overly romanticised descriptions of some of the moments of abuse really irked me, as they were often written as though the children were enjoying or commanding the situations themselves. After a while the descriptions started to feel gross and inappropriate on the part of the author, not the characters perpetrating the abuse. It was as though she had attempted to create Lana Del Ray-esque characterisations of 8 and 14-year-olds, who are instead supposed to be part of a literal paedophilia ring. Definitely dog – we had a labrador and springer spaniel as pets when I was growing up. Now we have a very docile whippet called Mitzy – who can run like the wind, but spends most of her day curled up sleeping on the sofa. Are you an early bird or night owl?

We felt it was difficult to feel empathy for any of the characters as they, each in their own way, had flaws which made them unlikeable. The word most used in our discussion about this book was “confusing” but despite that most of us said we enjoyed it. We found the lives of the children incredibly sad and their family life and living conditions were described by one member as “seedy and grimy” but that could be true of the time they were being raised, post WW1. The author gives a good sense of time and place all through the book which contributes to how authentic it feels but most of us found it a somewhat depressing read. Mrs Pardon will continue to lead the School for the next academic year with her customary dedication and drive, and will work closely with Mrs Walker to ensure a smooth handover. Walker still lives in the same house Anthony grew up in. “I’m not ready to leave the house,” she says. “His tree is right behind me in the garden. Each time one of them was born, we planted a tree. So Anthony is an apple tree. And it’s taken over my garden.” She giggles. “If I hear strange footsteps or a bouncing ball, I’m thinking: Anthony? Because that’s what he used to do. I hear children playing, I think Anthony. I go shopping and see things he might like. Sometimes at home, I stupidly look around and think he’s there. I can’t get away from him.” And that, she says, is both her anguish and her comfort. How has Anthony’s death changed her? “When you lose a child, it changes you in every way, shape and form. You have to be reprogrammed.” Shortly after Anthony’s death, she met Doreen Lawrence, the mother of Stephen Lawrence. “I asked Mrs Lawrence: ‘Does it get any easier?’ And she said: ‘No.’ I’m thankful that she didn’t lie to me because it doesn’t.” The tribunal found Mrs Walker and Miss Daley had given “distorted and exaggerated” accounts of what happened. Neither of them can really remember how they decided on telling the story of Anthony’s future. “I think the idea just evolved,” McGovern says. Some 20 minutes later, Mr Famojuro “calmly” approached Ms Daley and asked her for a “private word”. Miss Daley began to cry
