How does air get into a closed plumbing system? In some cases, it’s not air at all. If your pipes are a mix of iron and copper or brass, galvanic corrosion may be releasing hydrogen gas. Please note– This time is approximate and it will probably take longer if you are bleeding more than one radiator. Once you have protected the surrounding area and positioned your tray, hold the valve tightly with one spanner while you undo the union nut to the radiator with another. NOTE: For full and detailed instructions on how to do this see our removing a radiator project. 3. Drain the Water From the Radiator If you notice some radiators are significantly hotter than others, consider balancing the system by adjusting the radiator valves. You can get a self-tapping bleed valve screw that you can drill into the radiator panel on certain radiators.

If you can remove the old bleed valve or screw then replacing it is the best option most of the time.If bleeding the radiators does not solve the problem you are having with your central heating it may be that you need to remove and flush out and drain the radiators.

If your heating system features a combi boiler (or boiler that needs to be manually topped up) you may now need to top it up depending on how much water escaped during the bleeding process and/or how much air there was in the system. Cloth or towel: Keep a cloth or towel handy to catch any water that may escape during the bleeding process. Radiator bleed valves are cheap so if you can get the correct size easily then you should replace it when the old one leaks. Replacing The RadiatorWhen radiators have cold areas frequently, trapped air might not be the issue. Cold spots can be brought on by dirt and rust that accumulate over time, but they can also be an indication that your system is leaking. If you do have any air in your radiator it will rise to the top. 4. Locating a Radiator Bleed Valve Before starting any maintenance work on your heating system, it is always important to turn the heating off and allow the radiators to cool down to prevent burning yourself. Step 2: Isolate the radiator

When you have a radiator hot at the bottom and cold at the top then you will need to bleed the air out to get it fully heated again. The best way to do this is use a radiator bleed key, sometimes called a radiator vent key. Best Radiator Bleed Key Knowing how to bleed a radiator can save you a few quid and from having to wait for a plumber to sort it. Bleeding a radiator You will also need a tray of some kind that will sit on the floor below the pipe word and the union valve and catch any escaping water Sometimes when the bleed screw is broken off and you can’t remove it you might have to replace the radiator. It’s a good idea to bleed all the radiators, and not just the problem one. Begin on the lower floor at the radiator furthest from the boiler, then move sequentially closer in. Repeat that sequence on the upper floors.

An efficiently functioning heating system consumes less energy, leading to reduced utility bills and a more eco-friendly household. Increased Comfort & Warmth If you can remove the screw or small nut after isolating the radiator, you can add some jointing compound to the screw or PTFE tape to the nut and refit it. You can tell if this is the case by feeling the surface of your radiator. In many cases, you’ll find a cold spot around the top of the radiator surface, and could find that your radiator doesn’t get hot at all.
