About this deal

Place the vinegar in the jar and add the dish soap. Stir the ingredients to combine. Take the lid of the pot and create small holes using a nail and hammer. The holes should be approximately ½ a centimeter in diameter. Fungus gnats ( Orfelia and Bradysia species), also called darkwinged fungus gnats (Sciaridae), are dark, delicate-looking flies similar in appearance to mosquitoes. Adult fungus gnats have slender legs with segmented antennae that are longer than their head. Their long antennae distinguish them from the more robust shore flies, which are also found in greenhouses, associated with algae and decomposing organic matter, but have short bristle-like antennae. Although a few species are up to 1⁄2 inch long, fungus gnat adults commonly are about 1⁄16 to 1⁄8 inch long. Wings are light gray to clear, and the common Bradysia species have a Y-shaped wing vein. The harmful species invade the root system and change the plant’s metabolism via their saliva. For example, Beet cyst nematodes (Heterodera schachtii) can damage beetroot, spinach, and rapeseed. So, it’s essential to choose the right nematodes for your garden. Typically, the nematodes available online and in garden centres are safe for domestic use. There are over 20,000 species of nematode that we know of. However, scientists estimate there are likely as many as 10 million species.

The adult flies are small and dark in colour. They are more of a nuisance than they are damaging, and can be particularly annoying when they fly upwards from plants in high numbers. Larvae: Vine weevil grubs can be controlled by watering into compost or soil a suspension of pathogenic nematodes. For best results nematodes need to be used in a well-drained potting compost or light soil, which must be moist. Treatment in August to early September should control vine weevil grubs before they are large enough to cause serious damage to plant roots. David I. Shapiro-Ilan, GA Byron, and Randy Gaugler. BONIDE® Mosquito Beater Granules

One particular form of bacteria will destroy fungus gnat larvae: Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis. These bacteria are not in most commercial BT sprays but are available as active ingredients in commercial products as well. Use them to fertilize your growing media, and you should see a decline in your fungus gnat problems.

In the second bioassay with P. columbinus, significantly fewer adults emerged from straw treated with Bti compared to the S. feltiae treatment and water control ( Figure 3B: F 2, 27 = 7.66; p = 0.002). A significant difference was not detected in the number of adults that emerged from straw treated with S. feltiae compared to the water control. The Bti treatment resulted in a 57% reduction in adult emergence compared to the water control versus 27% for S. feltiae.

Harris® Super Sized Fly Sticky Traps

In the second bioassay with P. ostreatus, significantly fewer fungus gnats emerged from straw treated with Bti compared to S. feltiae and the water control ( Figure 4B: F 2, 27 = 14.35; p< 0.0001). Significantly fewer adults also emerged from straw treated with S. feltiae compared to the water control. The Bti treatment resulted in an 89% reduction compared to the water control versus 57% for S. feltiae. Mix this powder in a 1.5L watering can and water the area, preferably the ants nest. Keep the soil moist for two weeks. Fungus gnats are tiny flying bugs belonging to a few insect families (namely Sciaridae, aka dark-winged fungus gnats). They eat plant matter, mulch, compost, and—true to their name—fungus. All of these materials can be found outdoors, but these dietary needs can be found even more reliably in potting soil for houseplants. Their attraction to potting mix’s warmth and moisture makes fungus gnats particularly problematic indoor pests. Many people are concerned with bringing something ‘live’ into their home, but there’s nothing to worry about. They can’t interact with humans (or pets) at all. They can only interact with tiny larvae like the sciarid fly. You cannot see them with the human eye and they cannot leave the soil. Because adult fungus gnats are attracted to light, you first might notice these pests flying near windows indoors. However, in comparison with more active species such as the common housefly ( Musca domestica), fungus gnats are relatively weak fliers and usually don’t move around much indoors. Fungus gnats often remain near potted plants and run across (or rest on) growing media, foliage, compost, and wet mulch piles.
