About this deal

Today, the Makeup Museum unveils a vast, never-before-seen digital archive of the journals that Aucoin, widely considered the world’s first celebrity makeup artist, kept between 1983 to 1994. They document his Hollywood rolodex (Hello, Tina and Liza!), meetings with all-star collaborators and supermodel confidantes (Cindy, Linda, and Paulina...to name a few), and candid Polaroids snapped on iconic photoshoot sets, from Vogue editorials with Irving Penn to a Chanel campaign with Claudia Schiffer. Altogether, Aucoin’s personal notebooks offer a raw and authentic look into his day to day, the hustle and glamour of it. He could sense any fear. I know Linda Evangelista, he made her feel like "You got this!" You know, "I got you, you got this." Because it's scary to be that vulnerable. You're in someone else's clothes and people expect so much. He didn't expect anything of anyone. He just let them be.

The obvious aim of this book is to show people how to apply make up, which it does very well. What makes it worthwhile is all the ways it goes above and beyond that basic goal. The photography is beautiful (it's worth looking at just for that). Kevyn Aucoin's story of growing up, the stories of his siblings, and their role in the development of his talent is compelling and inspiring. AKT: I love the quote you start your documentary with. I think that is my favorite quote by Aucoin. "By showing someone else their beauty, you see the beauty in yourself." According to Kevin, he argues that makeup can make anyone any race they want, saying he can be Asian one moment and Spanish the next. I think that the climate of today's cancel culture would definitely not let him get away with saying that so this book definitely shows it is from another era.

We pay tribute to one of the most decorated makeup artists of all time and the looks that earned him such a status

Later, Aucoin would work with Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido on their Inoui line. [12] He would later be approached by both Vincent Longo and Laura Mercier to endorse their eponymous lines, [ citation needed] but decided to launch his own brand, Kevyn Aucoin Beauty, in 2001 instead. Read this in The Internet Archive. I'm sure the original coffee table book must be more impressive with larger and clearer pictures. But I'm glad I read it anyway. Kevin draws faces with expertise. I liked reading about his past as well and feel very proud that he survived his turbulent adolescence growing up as a closeted gay teen in a conservative small town. Now, he is one of the most notable makeup artists of our generation and seeing him live his truth and release such popular makeup products is very inspiring. The book would be a great introduction to beginners of makeup and fans of Aucoin.

Aucoin made appearances on Good Morning America and The Oprah Winfrey Show. [17] He played as himself in an episode of Sex and the City called "The Real Me" (Season 4, Episode 2), doing Carrie Bradshaw's makeup for a fashion show during New York Fashion Week. In addition, he appeared with Cher in "Gypsies, Tramps, and Weed" (Season 3, Episode 7) of Will & Grace. This was the first book on beauty I encountered that suggested to me that makeup can be used to express a feeling, a facet of yourself, an aspiration of who you wish to be in the moment. After the section on basics, there's a section of "looks" developed for ordinary people (male and female) alongside their own stories, which makes the book very accessible for those who might feel distant from the subject. The next section, which is entirely celebrities, is more "glamorous" but gives you the details of how to acheive those looks as well. In 1999 he received an honorary diploma from Harvey Milk High School for his support of gay and transgender youth. The Kevyn Aucoin Beauty brand has remained in business since his death, and is still sold in multiple stores, including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Sephora, and Space.NK. The late artist is arguably one of the most decorated in his field. His attitude to makeup was fresh and exciting – it was a means to transform and make women feel naturally beautiful. His clientele included everyone who was anyone: Cindy Crawford, Audrey Hepburn, Naomi Cambell, Linda Evangelista, Liza Minelli, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cher, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Christy Turlignton. His signature was sculpted, polished and defined – he added depth, light and shade like no one else. He was the creator of modern contouring – a method since adopted by its patron saint, Kim Kardashian Went.
