About this deal

She tells a story about a boy with a heart of stone, who finds himself in a predicament with a monster girl who won’t scare him away, until his heart starts beating again.

Like Taryn’s novella The Lost Sisters, How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories revisits instances we already know about.I also adored the tale that was woven throughout this collection and watching how it changed and grew. It’s definitely worth paying a little extra to own a hardback edition of the book as it’s absolutely stunning. Regardless, the faery tale-esque vibe and the beautiful illustrations in this novella made for a very cute and fun read! How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is a breath of fresh air—the fairy tale atmosphere, the razor-sharp wit, the allure of the fey. Hatred for Dain; for his father; for all the siblings who didn’t take him in and the one who did; for his mother, who spat at his feet as she was led away; for stupid, disgusting mortals; for all of Elfhame and everyone in it.

Cardan had trusted Nicasia not to hurt him, which was ridiculous, since he well knew that everyone hurts one another and that the people you loved hurt you the most grievously. He forms such an imperative part in what makes Elfhame and so by being inside his mind you are also inside Elfhame and I love that.

Readers familiar with Cardan and Jude’s tumultuous and sometimes troubling love will recognize notes within this repeated tale, but each telling also stands alone as a complete tale, one that feels both inevitable and fresh. New York Times bestselling author, Holly Black reveals a deeper look into the dramatic life of Elfhame’s enigmatic high king, Cardan.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: This book wouldn't have been possible without Balekin, Locke and Nicasia's stupidness. The illustrations by Rovina Cai are exquisite and woven throughout the series of short stories wonderfully. There short story's that add some great info to the folk of air trilogy, especially on cardans side as it’s all about him. Each chapter is paired with lavish and luminous full-color art, making this the perfect collector’s item to be enjoyed by both new audiences and old. its really effective at building cardans character and expanding upon his development from the series. He was a villain, then a villain in name only, then a king, but he remains a soft, vulnerable character inside. This tale includes delicious details of life before The Cruel Prince, an adventure beyond The Queen of Nothing, and familiar moments from The Folk of the Air trilogy, told wholly from Cardan’s perspective.
