It's really about all dogs who just can't help themselves but eat everything in sight, chase the odd cat or dig around in the soil in your perfectly manicured garden. It's good to open up discussions about what they'd do in George's place and what they actually should do in George's place! However for George the cake looks just too delicious to resist and we are shown him having gobbled it all up.

Recently went on holiday with friends with children and this was hit with all of them when we did the bedtime story together. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Howlingly funny, its luridly elegant illustrations will be in frequent demand; ideal for parents and grandparents to read aloud. But I have edited this review because after a few repetitions, the simple story, with its punch line, hooked her and it became a favourite. Shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, Chris Haughton's distinctive artwork perfectly accompanies the innocent charm of affable George, a dog trying to be good – with hilarious results!

At first, she just didn't engage with this one and I think it was because the illustrations are very retro and impressionistic. Bérénice adore la drôle de dégaine de ce chien qui n'a, comme elle, pas beaucoup de contrôle sur ses pulsions. That George also gets the chance to do it all again the right way shows children that they can do it too and that we all learn eventually. And his owner, Harry, has all the best hopes that George will be a well-behaved dog when he leaves him alone for the day. I also blend in the good choice/bad choice teaching method that is used in my daughter’s preschool classroom.

The very simple text of this book will delight young readers who can focus on the pictures to make meaning. The individual's struggle for self-control is subtly conveyed in George's story, which manages to make old concept fresh thanks to George's winning personality and a vibrant, jazzy artistic style. Kids will relate to this dog who has every intention of being good, but just can't help himself when tempted. The book tells the story of a dog named George who continually disobeys his owner Harris who asked him to be good before he left him on his own for the day.

It is delightful for the tinies and delightful for the grown-ups, and its charm does not diminish on repeated readings which is vital in a kids' book. There is an orange theme throughout most of the illustrations although there are some contrasting colours and I just love the way the whole book looks. is full of questions which you can discuss with your little ones, getting them to guess/remember what happens next. Haughton's retro illustrations capture George's inner turmoil in both the position of his ears and the subtle shift of his eyeballs.

Set to a gorgeously rich colour palette of purples, orange and deep crimson, this is a delightfully playful tale with minimal text but oodles of personality that shows how the best intentions can go awry. Oh No George' came out in March 2012 and has been nominated for 6 awards in 4 countries including the Roald Dahl Funny award. Bold, hilarious artwork captures the innocent charm of affable George, a dog who is trying to be good — with disastrous results. As well as then abstaining from the same temptation later as he has learned his lesson allows discussion with the child about moral choices and why it is important to be good, especially when you have said you would be. The two-page spread of George with his mouth open like some sort of gaping steam shovel, having just bitten off a third of the cake, is roll-on-the-floor hilarious. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Chris Haughton now lives and works as an author-illustrator and designer in London. Also love how she laughs at the last page every single time, I've not seen any other books make her laugh like that.
