As the quotes grew longer, and the interviews deeper, Stanton developed a signature storytelling style—one that blends the lure of urban voyeurism with an eye for the extraordinary detail in seemingly ordinary subjects. In this way, HONY joins organizations like TED and the Moth at the vanguard of a slow but certain lexical refashioning. Humans Of New York is a map pinpointing the city’s diversity among his photos, subject and literacy can be life changing for the reader.

It is a stunning collection of images that will appeal not just to those who have been drawn in by the outsized personalities of New York, but to anyone interested in the breathtaking scope of humanity it displays. In March 2016, Stanton wrote an open letter to Donald Trump that went viral on Facebook, garnering over 2. Humans of New York expands on Stanton's project with four hundred colour photos, including exclusive portraits, all-new stories, and a distinctive vellum jacket. I know what it’s like, because I lived in a Chinese orphanage until the age of ten, and I wasn’t able to go to school because I couldn’t walk. In HONY, there is often a caption with only a sentence or two while HONY: Stories, each story was usually a paragraph long. Both convey something almost spiritual: something about the delicate string that hangs between youth and resilience, about the miraculous talent of children, however voiceless, to stand unswallowed by the city. The series partnered with the nonprofit, Headstrong Project, to highlight the mental health struggles veterans experience. He used his work there to raise awareness of Syeda Ghulam Fatima's efforts to help Pakistani brickworkers that had become bonded laborers. The book included some quotes and stories, but largely it represented the photographic origins of HONY.
