Throughout the next handful of episodes we see both Light Yagami and L play mind-games with each other; sometimes in the open and sometimes in private – both of which are waiting for the other person to slip up and make a mistake. The American Blu-ray release of Death Note, which saw the thirty-seven episodes across five Blu-ray discs, featured all of the DVD bonus features retained and used; however with this UK Blu-ray release we have nothing. All the voices suit their characters, and the performances live up to the hype surrounding the anime. We use cookies to give you the best possible experience on our site, provide personalised content and advertising, analyse our traffic, and ensure you see more of what you love. The episodes are: 'Rebirth', 'Confrontation', 'Dealings', 'Pursuit', 'Tactics', 'Unraveling', 'Overcast', 'Glare', 'Encounter', 'Doubt', 'Assault', 'Love', 'Confession', 'Friend', 'Wager', 'Decision', 'Execution', 'Ally', 'Matsuda', 'Makeshift', 'Performance', 'Guidance', 'Frenzy', 'Revival', 'Silence', 'Renewal', 'Abduction', 'Impatience', 'Father', 'Justice', 'Transfer', 'Selection', 'Scorn', 'Vigilance', 'Malice', '1.

It’s this compelling experience that makes Death Note so thrilling to watch; will Light Yagami be captured, or will L be killed by the mysterious abilities of the Death Note. From my perspective the Death Note Blu-ray provides the best experience you can receive from the series; but you’d need to own the series on both DVD and Blu-ray to get the best of both worlds.

The story follows the highly intelligent 17-year-old student Light Yagami, who one day spots a black book falling past his classroom window.

As you say, the mystic of the story captured even those who were strangers to the whole anime culture. The minute you do that, you’ll start noticing plot holes, loose threads, and should you tug on one, the whole tapestry of the story will just fall apart. The consequences of Light’s actions will set the world ablaze and pit him against the only one smart enough to oppose him, L an eccentric genius and international private detective. The Shinigami exist to shepherd souls across to the other side, and where convenient give them a helping hand. For those of you who are not familiar, Death Note the anime is based on the groundbreaking Death Note manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata (and published by VIZ Media; rated ‘T’ for Teens). When so many criminals start dying all other the world, Interpol gets into contact with the world’s greatest detective, a man simply known as “L”.

For some reason I thought Code Geass was created before Death Note, hence the whole time I felt Light was just a copycat of Lelouch. The Standard Edition and Omega Limited Edition each contain three hours of additional bonus content including interviews with the Death Note manga creators and behind-the-scenes footage of the English and Japanese voice cast. Soon he has a plan to clean up the criminal, the sick and depraved, and remove them from the world, crafting his ideal society, a society over which he will have the power of a god. It’s engaging, it’s deceitful and provides plenty of suspense – and this is only the first arc of the series. Of course my preference as always is for the original language track, and there were no problems here either.Once you start contemplating the things that happen in Death Note, they become more and more untenable. It’s one of those epoch defining shows, like Sailor Moon, Full Metal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop, a show that is a signpost for anime fandom, making the anime industry pause, and re-evaluate what it’s doing, most likely change direction as well.
