In 1981 Honda released the GL500 Silver Wing, which was a mid-sized touring bike based on the CX500 engine. It was superseded by the CX650TD (CX650 Turbo; D=1983) for the 1983 model year, which was itself discontinued the same year. The CX650 Turbo was an improvement on the CX500 turbo; changes were made to the compression ratio and boost pressure to make for a less abrupt transition to being on-boost. The Japanese caps are installed in the 5VSB circuit, where top-quality components are required since this rail operates in passive mode with the PSU's fan, not in operation. The pair of STMicroelectronics FETs is arranged into a half-bridge topology, and an LLC resonant converter is also used to boost efficiency.

Many of the reports were written when the CXs were new, when their technology was cutting edge, and when their innovative engineering captured the imagination.Growing concern about pollution and safety had governments increasingly regulating motor vehicles; but we weren’t too worried. Replacing that and then the rectifier/regulator only provided a temporary sop to the machine’s need for power - the alternator was burning out, as soon as one coil went the power flowing through the rest quickly left a black molten mess. The starter clutch rollers grind on the crankshaft, and you can hear the grinding noise when you start the bike up. Period testers found that, although the CX500 Turbo was blindingly fast on boost, easily reaching 125mph, it was expensive, thirsty and suffered from a phenomenon known as turbo lag, meaning it would hesitate before the turbo spooled up and sent it lunging ahead. In the end they gathered all their old bits together and produced the Eurosport, put a 400cc CX engine in and sold in the domestic market with a few being exported to New Zealand.
