About this deal

The hyperactive and impulsive ones among us have adapted over time from hunters to consumers, and many have learned new behaviors and strategies to fit into a neurotypical world. He does spend time talking about the high incidence of ADHD in prisons, outside of a very brief paragraph he avoids discussing the systemic reasons that people of color, and people in poverty are less likely to get treatment for ADHD, and more likely to have harsh sentences for crime.

There are also various practical strategies and historical anecdotes that are at once inspiring and hope instilled. Wright posits that all of human behavior is based on a single motivation---will this behavior continue my gene pool. As an entrepreneur, he's founded several successful businesses which still are operating, and lived and worked with his wife, Louise, and their three (now adult) children on several continents.

Genetic variants (such as the DRD4 7R allele, as well as others on DRD4 and DRD2) conferring susceptibility to ADHD are very frequent—implying that the trait had provided selective advantage in the past.

Hartmann’s theory, now fairly widely accepted as I understand it, helps to illustrate and explain the differences between my neurodivergent brain and a neurotypical brain. My guess is the latest version hasn't been sufficiently updated with the newer scientific understandings in the field. They gradually moved west across what is now Europe and North Africa, and eventually across the Atlantic into North America. Does school, compared to home, provide a unique adaptive context for children's ADHD-associated behaviors? Another factor in understanding ADHD is understanding the roles of the thalamus and reticular formation. The strategies would have probably been very helpful, although luckily I've already found my own way. I identified strongly with certain characteristics from both archetypes, which I don’t think is surprising or unusual.

I am old school and for better or worse I think ADHD is a label society give kids so that they can medicate and not have to deal with behavioral problems. For the Hunter school child, again setting goals and rewarding performance in meeting the goals need to be short-term and daily. It is argued that in the hunter-gatherer cultures that preceded farming societies, hunters needed hyperfocus more than gatherers.

It will give you those answers to those annoying questions sick as, 'Why didn't we have it in our day? It really seems to lose its coherence to the evolutionary argument and lets rampant capitalism take over.Hartmann delivers a balance of science, sociology, and humor that will help you process what it means to be a person with ADHD. They can throw an incredible burst of energy into the hunt, so much so that they often injure themselves or exceed “normal” capabilities, without realizing it until later. But with the Farmers’ conquests in moving west they became the dominators and takers of what laid before them. If you want an easy quick read then go for it but if you are looking for something more substantial then skip it.
