The solution to the mystery is far-fetched and disappointing, but the journey to get to it is delightful. The dust cover was very slightly damaged (torn) at the bottom of the spine but I guess that is what happens when a hardback with a loose outer sleeve gets stuffed into a flat, cardboard envelope. He and Valerie are still dancing around each other, and they still work well as a team -by accident rather than design they solve the case, it seems sometimes. One day, however, one of his older guests disappears, leaving behind a bloody handprint on the wallpaper. A very entertaining romp in the French countryside with distinctive characters and a rollicking sense of humor. As expected in the third instalment of the Follet Valley Mystery series, this crazy pair find themselves in an impossibley bizarre situation. I'd recommend Death at the Chateau to any reader who enjoys humorous, action-packed "cosy" mysteries, especially those who enjoy European settings and plenty of cinematic references. I love this wonderful series and its laughing out loud wacky situations, its delightful quirkiness full of goofy slapstick and delicious verbal pyrotechnics, and last but not least its screwy cast of characters, peacocks and hens included. Another hilarious and exciting adventure with Richard and Valérie and a refreshing change of scene as we are set in a historical French château.

I loved the plot: a film production company shooting a film based on Napoleon, cranky and egotistical actors, actresses being stalked, romance and two-timings, and of course, deaths under suspicious circumstances. In starting this book, I did have some trouble getting initially invested in the plot, but once the plot was established, it was smooth sailing from there. Now at the third (proper) instalment of the Follet Valley series, we are starting to see the characters as old friends, and that is precisely what you might expect and certainly want from this type of fiction.

In true Pamplemousse fashion, the detective uncovers hidden motives and cleverly unravels the truth behind the crime, all while indulging in the region's delectable croissants and gastronomic delights. His characterisations of Richard as an Englishman, from the point of view of the French, and a man from the point of view of women is just brilliant (to borrow Valérie's constant refrain). This terrific novel is the perfect antidote to forget for a few joyful hours the depressing world we live in!Death at the Chateau is the latest of the Follet Valley Mysteries following Richard Ainsworth, a middle-aged Englishman who has moved to the bucolic Loire Valley where he runs a Bed and Breakfast. Egos collide and suspects abound as Richard and Valérie, aided by Richard's redoubtable and resourceful femme de ménage (domestic help) Madame Tablier, set about investigating the crime. A TV/radio regular, he stars in Dave’s satirical TV show Unspun and Channel 5’s topical comedy Big Mouths . As he enjoys the splendor of the luxurious estate and indulges in sumptuous feasts, he becomes entangled in a sinister plot involving ancient family secrets and a string of peculiar deaths. This book was a quick read, one that is witty, with fun characters and a bit of will they won't they It's not a challenging read or full of too much angst and grit. Gallery images of our book boxes show an example of what may be included – treat and gift content may differ.Richard and Valérie’s fledgling Follet Valley-based private investigation company has a new job — security and bodyguard duties for a Hollywood production and one of its stars, filming in the nearby Chateau de Valençay. But then an extra, who is 102 years old (a bit lived already) has a heart attack while playing Napoleon in close-ups from behind. Richard still owns a boutique hotel, still loves classic movies, hates IMPD, talks to his beloved flock of chickens, and tries to avoid his "competitors". I do also think this could be enjoyed as a standalone read, and overall is a great summer read for anyone who enjoys a cosy mystery with a good dose of self-deprecating British humour! This book was every bit of excitement and adventure that I was hoping for and as always an incredibly enjoyable experience.

Jag var inte så förtjust i de tidigare delarna så efter lite funderande så har jag kommit fram till att jag struntar i denna bok och serie. And the longer you are with him and these adventures continue the more confident and normal everything seems.dream working on a film set but soon the dream turns to a nightmare when people on the set end up dead.
