The T1 vertebral spinous process, being consistently the most prominent spinal process, was used as a landmark for the back marker cluster. Regular simple analgesia (such as paracetamol and ibuprofen) usually helps with this, and should be taken as per package instructions. Finally, it should be noted that cervical orthoses are not the only means of restricting spinal motion. You should avoid standing still or sitting for prolonged periods as this will cause your back to stiffen and your posture to deteriorate. Information related to various health, medical, and fitness conditions and their treatment is not meant to be a substitute for the advice provided by a physician or other medical professional.

Whether it’s providing therapeutic motion restriction, reducing skin breakdown, improving posture or reducing muscle spasm, Aspen products continue to help drive industry standards in spinal bracing for efficacy, quality, design and outcomes. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The neck muscles may initially feel weak or stiff after the doctor tells you that you can stop wearing the collar, but this usually recovers naturally. Cervical collars are required for multiple reasons, the most common being for fracture management in the neck (broken bone) and the collar is used for management of the fracture, it can also be used for support pre/ post-surgery. Hard collars are rigid neck collars worn while injuries or stable fractures of the neck are healing.

You may feel stiff initially in the affected part of the neck when you start to wean the use of your collar. If your injury were a cervical spine fracture, you may find that the pain worsens initially, but you should experience a gradual improvement over the next 6-8 weeks. There is currently no literature available on their ability to restrict cervical spine motion relative to their respective standard designs. The physiological range of motion in the three planes was analysed using the Qualisys Track Manager System.

It may be necessary to apply pads to help prevent pressure damage for any patients deemed ‘at risk’. Contact your GP, practice nurse or specialist nurse for assessment if you notice any signs of skin discolouration, redness and/or pain underneath the collar. The collar is usually worn for a period of twelve weeks to support your neck and prevent movement around the injury site but this can alter depending on your healing rate and your consultant’s opinion.

Eight ProReflex (Qualisys, Sweden) infrared cameras were used to track the movement of retro-reflective marker clusters placed in predetermined positions on the head and trunk. Ask the assistant to change the pads of the back panel and clean / check the skin at the back of the neck – (use mirror to help, if required). Under the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018 we are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of any information we hold about you. The cervical collar works by reducing the ability to move your neck, giving a degree of reduced mobility of your head and neck. The collar will have supported you up until this point and slumping will cause additional strain on your muscles. Your doctor will tell you whether your child needs to keep their collar on all the time or if it can be removed. This leaflet is designed to provide you with information on how to apply and remove your neck collar and advises on cleaning and hygiene. The Aspen Vista collar was consistently less effective than the other collars at restricting the cervical spine through physiological ranges of movement, a finding that may be attributable to its one-size-fits-all design. Each MCU emitted infra-red light which was reflected by retro-reflective body markers and detected by the MCUs scanning the field of view sixty times per second (60 Hz).

kinematic data were collected during forward flexion, extension, lateral bending and axial rotation from uncollared to collared subjects. The Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne accepts no responsibility for any inaccuracies, information perceived as misleading, or the success of any treatment regimen detailed in these handouts. Have a family member, carer or mirror to hand to look at your neck and ensure there is no irritation or areas for concern. Roll onto your side and swing your legs over the edge of the bed, whilst pushing up with your arms (see diagram below). Comfort is further enhanced by hypoallergenic, cotton-lined replacement pads that cushion the interface between the “structure” of the collar and the tender skin surface of patients. If you experience any continuing weakness or a limited ability to move your neck, a physiotherapy review might be of benefit.
