In short, this is a well-intentioned book which, notwithstanding some interesting material, such as its photographs, is ultimately rather pedestrian. She also criticized the novel for its lack of character development, saying “These horrible partners — the deadbeat druggie manchild, the abusive future murderer and the cheat — come off as caricatures rather than rounded characters. The other really outstanding aspect of this book is the world-building, the science and combat sequences, which were all done exceptionally well, and brought the story to life around the characters.

this book would be a nice addition to any library’s sports or history collection, bringing attention to a forgotten hero. Abandoned as a baby, Connolly spent his childhood in St Leonards Children's Home in East London, a cesspit of mental and physical abuse. This book follows the true story of the journey and life of Paul Connolly, a man who's family, originally from Connemara in Ireland, moved to London not long after Paul was born. I hated his insistence on giving the reader everyone's skin tone, like dude, we get it - good guys are tall and white, good people of color listen to and admire him, and bad people of color want to kill him, so he kills them. This vast wealth attracted the attention of unscrupulous whites who found ways to divert it to themselves by marrying Osage women or by having Osage declared legally incompetent so the whites could fleece them through the administration of their estates. But - there's always that 'but' - I was still really glad that he got his happy-as-it-could-be ending. An inspirational true story of how an abandoned baby made a success of his life, truly " against all odds'' he was smart enough to work out how to survive these institutional bullies . Just as important, Berkot not only creates individual characters, he also conveys the emotional state of each of his characters so that you understand how they are feeling at that time, whether happy, sad, angry or tired?

When Paul reached the desperate point where he thought he would end the lives of his abusers, amazingly the words and relationship with his psychologist were enough. The story believably portrays the day-to-day life of a futuristic warship crew, taking time to develop the characters and their relationships. Britt learned that a "submarine torpedo [had] hit our transport standing off shore and all our equipment went down with it.

However it's also very shocking to read what these poor children were put through while they were in care. I feel like I may need to repeat the word autobiography to myself often, just to remind myself that this really happened and that it wasn't just some gritty fictional novel that I was reading. Ellie's story highlights the importance of family, and how community and support can carry people through the toughest of times.

These men fought at the sharp edge, so Kershaw pours out a steady stream of vicious small-unit actions filled with merciless brutality and bloodshed. Just as you think things couldn’t get anymore captivating and enthralling, another event will unfold and you won’t be able to put the book down until you have found out what is going to happen. I almost stopped at this book because his portrayal of Muslims was so Islamaphobic, sadly I can't say that was really the worst part. There are multiple other characters in this book (and I am not going to give spoilers), but they are all just extraordinary.

There were parts that I felt uneccessary repetition and the ending was very drawn out - the grittiness gone and the fact he is now doing well for himself is almost a little irksome. The sacrifices made by this “greatest generation” are really brought out in Kershaw’s narrative and Americans should be grateful that we had men such as these who stepped forward in this hour of greatest need in the 20th century.however it then becomes such an eye opener i feel like ive had an education on wallks of life that i didnt know about .
