Description

Tender and heartfelt, Now You See us also manages to be laugh-out-loud funny while offering searing commentary on misogyny, race, and class. Poignant, intelligent yet wickedly funny – a delightful read that reignites one's belief in the power of sisterhood’ June Sarpong --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. After all, no-one knows the secrets of Singapore's elite quite like the women who work in their homes. Their later lives, detailing marriages, work, social justice activism, and other activities, are summarized.

Balli Kaur Jaswal's latest novel is The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters (Harper Collins/William Morrow). Angel, has a position that has been good but circumstances in the household have changed and she now is not only uncomfortable, but she is also unsafe. I kept getting people confused despite having seen them multiple times, and I think it’s just because they didn’t make much of an impression. Corazon, Donita, and Angel are Filipina domestic workers—part of the wave of women sent to Singapore to be cleaners, maids, and caregivers. This is especially true at the end (where there is a profession of love that comes from absolutely no where! I do rather wish there had been 3 different narrators for the audio (if not 4), but I still thought Angela Lin did a fantastic job and I thoroughly enjoyed her narration for this book. Born in Singapore and raised in Japan, Russia and the Philippines, Jaswal studied creative writing in the United States and worked as an English teacher in Australia and Turkey, and held fellowships at the University of East Anglia and Nanyang Technological University.Daniel D'Addario from Variety mentioned in a glowing review of the miniseries, that " When They See Us immerses viewers in a tale with none of the gaudy fun that true crime often offers. I think possibly the most striking parts are the pitch-perfect extracts from a FB group of employers complaining about their maids: horrifying in the banality of its cruelty.

From Reese’s Book Club veteran Balli Kaur Jaswal comes a wildly entertaining and sharply observed story of three women who work in the homes of Singapore’s elite, and band together to solve a murder mystery involving one of their own. But, on the negative side none of this really makes a lot of sense and there is no way you can enjoy it if you think.
