It has its minor flaws, but the memorable characters, the innovative storyline, and the smooth writing style all ensured that this was a solid read for me. As each character is introduced and began to acclimate into this found family of sorts, I began to deeply care for each of them.

I devoured this book in one sitting - and while I wish I could have taken the time to enjoy it even more, nothing can take away the enjoyment I had with this story. If you are hard-core about your horror, you will probably find this too lightweight for your tastes. There are lots of 5 star reviews for this book so clearly very popular, so perhaps it just isn't right for me. I can’t say too much about the enchanted house without spoiling anything, but suffice it to say Holmberg does such a great job of writing in fun little quirks of magic. If I had read this at some other time of the year, I am sure I would have binge-read it from start to end. As the author explores two completely dissimilar people in two utterly dissimilar places, the writing may initially seem a little muddled and disconnected.

The magical world she is building is really interesting and I appreciate the fact she’s trying to include a clean romance aspect too, bc we probably don’t have enough of those, and mixed with magic — I think that’s cool, perhaps a bit unique. And the sentient walls aren't their only concern-something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within.

If you enjoy books about magical worlds that are still Christian, with romantic tropes then this is for you! An author who is currently working on his second book, he is thrilled to realize that this might solve his current housing predicament. Her imagination is wonderful, so I would actually consider another title from her, but not if it’s HF. The rest of the book was so perfect, why leave us without the cherry that tops such a wonderful story?

The blend of magic, mystery and romance was better than I could've hoped for, and I can't wait for the next book in the Whimbrel House series. One of the best reads of this year, so happy there will be more stories of this fantastic gang, Heir of Uncertain Magic. But I kept seeing positive reviews and I’ve been on a bit of a quirky magical romance kick lately, so I decided to finally open it and see what all the fuss was about. And despite a seemingly vast world, she insists on telling stories that are very similar at their core.
