The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. I continue to be super curious about how digital and tech are enabling people to transform our lives but I try to read a good mix of books that apply to a variety of areas and stretch my thinking more broadly. There’s also Alison Bechdel’s superb graphic novel Fun Home with its far from faultless recently deceased father. Bechdel explores intimate details about her own coming-of-age: her father’s interior life, his closeted sexuality and his death, told with humour and literary reference, including a running theme of famously ill-fated father-son pair Daedalus and Icarus. It’s easy for the bad times (and there will be bad times) to eclipse the wonder that is raising another human.

Dad Is Fat is a hilarious book for dads, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan brings a dose to humor to fatherhood. As parents we all want the best for our children, but so often we give in to societal pressures which can result in us overmanaging every aspect of their lives leaving them overwhelmed, over-scheduled and lacking motivation.
