A few of the students including Ian still have fairly serious facial expressions but more are smiling overall. I'm going all the way to Livderpool by train straight from work and I need the toilet but only slightly. Not sure if its dependent on the head chef that's working at the time, but sometimes the salad has dressing, sometimes its bland with no dressing. My wife had the cream of onion soup for starters which was nice but didn’t taste of onion more of the cream, she also had chicken and halloumi salad which lacked dressing but again was totally acceptable and flavor some.

Would have been able to cope normally but it was absolutely scorching and packed by the time I managed to get on a train! Here's my mother, Jean Morrison as she then was, aged 10 at Somerfield School, Christchurch NZ in Standard 4, 1936.

Clearly posing for photographs was a serious business and smiling was not the done thing whenever this photograph was taken. Now here is a photograph from my father-in-law Bob Featherston's collection, showing him with his fellow boy scout troop members, displaying a trophy they had won. On the whole it was an enjoyable visit with good food, but there are definitely improvements to be made but I would definitely give it another try, maybe just having an off day. The girl in the spotted dress in the 3rd row is smiling, and a couple of other children have the glimmer of a smile, including my father, but the great majority of the others are downright scowling and certainly look like they are not enjoying their school days at all. nearly 3 hours for a 3 course meal isn’t great, most other places have you in and out comfortably within 60-90 mins. The Chips were again the best I've tasted in years, clearly double or treble cooked and a lovely dark brown. No waiter came over and asked about the quality of the food till we were at least 2/3 of the way through (the meal was perfect but that’s beside the point). When his child's meal was brought out, the waiter said to be careful with his plate as it was piping hot. Not sure who thought it would be a good idea to put a childs meal on a piping hot plate but the waiter put it on a different one for us anyway when we asked.

In the Jubilee photograph above, the unlisted 74 year old Ian is wearing a blue shirt and cream jacket on the far right of the second row. Only those wishing to go on to university would have stayed on to complete this final education year. Here in a combined group of Standard 5-6 pupils in 1937, she is seated second from left in the front row.

It seems strange today to see a photograph of a group of children looking so serious with hardly a smile. Their senseless efforts have no effect as people like yourselves - the army of regulars - keep coming back time again to make Tocketts Mill the popular venue that it is.

There were 2 new staff being trained when we were in and at times it seemed a bit hectic, with a few occasions staff walking around the restaurant with food not knowing which table they were for.Her mother Doris didn't drive, so unless the dancing school had a bus, Frank would have had to take Mary to perform at the various venues around the countryside. The decor is good and good to see that social distancing is being maintained during the Covid-19 era. Had a lasagne that night - they used to be the tastiest thing at Tocketts but now they unfortunately lack flavour and meat.
