Publisher's black cloth-effect material over boards, blocked in silver and red metallic foil to spine and upper, pictorial jacket by Richard Chopping. were a famous firm of publishers, printers and booksellers founded in 1819 by William Thacker, an East India Company surgeon, joined by his nephew William Spink in 1839. The Man with the Golden Gun is in the second issue jacket with darker grey lettering than the earlier issue.

According to Higson, Fleming spent the first four novels changing the style of his books, and his approach to his characters, but in From Russia, with Love the author "finally hits on the classic Bond formula, and he happily moved into his most creative phase". The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo. A near-fine copy in the bright jacket, rear panel with small faint stain and 1 cm short closed tear at foot.

This raised eyebrows among certain of Dulles's peers, who viewed the Bond novels as a salacious and populist 6misconstruction of intelligence work. Fleming re-wrote the end of the novel in April 1956 to make Klebb poison Bond, which allowed him to finish the series with the death of the character if he wanted.From Russia, with Love is frequently considered the best James Bond novel by many fans and critics (although even critical opinion varies greatly). The same month the diver Lionel Crabb had gone missing on a mission to photograph the propeller of the Soviet cruiser Ordzhonikidze while the ship was moored in Portsmouth Harbour, an incident that was much reported and discussed in British newspapers.

In August 1956, for fifty guineas, Fleming commissioned Richard Chopping to provide the art for the cover, based on Fleming's design; the result won a number of prizes.

Given that James Bond also had an address in Coatbridge, near Glasgow, it appears he was a Scot, further enhancing the serendipity. All Cape printings (the original publisher of the James Bond novels), the final three titles being first impressions. A number of initial leaves of this notebook were excised at a previous time and are now held in the Lilly Library.
