Description

My niggle with this was incoming projectiles on the far left or right of the screen as when reloading, the reticle would go back to the centre, and you’d eventually take a bullet to the face.

There isn’t any retro pixel art, 3D models or cel shading, just static images, or cut-outs if you like, of various rogues and innocent bystanders that you aren’t supposed to shoot. You can forget about boring stories, complicated controls and irritating tutorials, and jump right into a mind blowing, high-speed action. There has been various attempts at reviving this style of game with Wii-motes and Playstation Move controllers, but non truly captured the speed and flickering white screen accuracy of the genre pioneers. We opted for a strategy of ‘you take the left side, I’ll take the right’, but the continual bullet slipping through or your partner shooting an explosive that takes off some health means it gets a bit of a free-for-all and everyone for themselves.

Mad Bullets is one of the first light gun shooters I’ve played on the Nintendo Switch up to this point. These are usually highlighted in a green glow, and you must avoid shooting them otherwise you’ll lose one of your 3 Sheriff badges which represent your health in Mad Bullets. Because there are a lot of innocent bystanders amongst the crowd, you’ll find that they are all differentiated by a colour outline to indicate their threat level.

After being stuck in the game, I started using the right Joy-Con so that I could access the home button. However, these are small issues that can be easily overcome, and they don’t ruin the main experience.

Of course there is a button to recenter your aim but here is where the real problem with the controls lies for me. They are usually slow enough for you to shoot them, but there are occasions where the enemy will fire multiple bullets, and you simply can’t reload fast enough. A stray bullet will inevitably hit one of the innocents – they get in the way a hell of a lot – when a bullet does connect, you’ll lose health, represented by a sheriff badge. To regain access, please make sure that cookies and JavaScript are enabled before reloading the page. To make sure it wasn’t an issue with the motion sensors in my joycons, I started poking around the Switch’s setting for test and calibration to which everything seemed to be fine, when I noticed the ‘update firmware’ option for the Joycons, something I had never considered to do since launch! We aren’t spoilt for choice with this type of game on the Switch, let alone other platforms, but regardless, this is a title definitely worth playing, and I think it takes the mantle of light gun games for me until Sega Ages attempt a H ouse of the Dead 2 port. I’m in the old school camp and will tell you to ‘reach for the sky’ as in Mad Bullets, someone’s gonna get shot. If you can pick this up in a sale knowing what you getting into, you will have some fun with it if you like the genre, but frustrating controls really make it hard to whole heartedly recommend. There are a ton of levels to play through with a huge variety of enemies to shoot and innocent people to save! Everything from the later 3D releases such as Virtual Cop to the to the classics like Operation Wolf.

Mad Bullets Review | Bonus Stage is the world's leading source for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PC, Playstation 4, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii U, Wii, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PS Vita, and DS Video Game Reviews with over 5500 in-house reviews to date. Eventually, I found the best way to play the game was very subtle movements and not to point the joy-con as if it were a TV remote. My review was originally going to be from playing in handheld mode, but let’s be honest here, it’s a bit of a pig aiming the joy-con on such a small screen. You either duel weld two joy-cons and pretend your rogue cowboy or pass one them controllers to a friend or partner and have someone along for the ride. It’s especially disappointing as there appears to be a really decent game locked behind the controls.

This system must be updated to the latest system software and connected to the internet with automatic downloads enabled, and it must have enough storage to complete the download. The reticle was either pinned to the top and bottom of the screen with next to no room for movement on screen to aim rendering the game completely unplayable. Upon starting up, you’ll notice you can slide the analogue stick to the right which can let you select any one of the 60 levels you’ve unlocked. You can literally plug a mouse into the switch and use it, and it has a touch screen, however the controls are solely restricted to motion controls only with Joycon on the Switch version. Upon starting your Wild West rampage, you’ll need to calibrate your Joy-Cons by shooting in the centre of the screen and the upper left-hand corner.
