Robin Wright's Lieutenant Joshi spends most of her time speechifying, while Jared Leto's narcissistic Niander Wallace prattles on about Mankind's destiny. Textures of clothes and surfaces are better conveyed, including K's camo green jacket (which you could mistake for being black) and the dirt smudges and cracks in K's apartment. But trust me when I say that Villeneuve deftly handles the material and allows the audience time to ruminate on the ideas and come to their own debatable conclusions.

He wasn't well-served by Scott's original film, playing a lonely character that had a rocky relationship with Sean Young's Rachel. The positioning and steering of effects are seamless as gunshots zip past, Spinners throttle across the screen and waves crash along the Sepulveda Wall in the film's climax.Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. It's more than happy with quieter scenes, the absence of noise used to great effect to hold attention. Some shots and scenes it's difficult to spot any real difference, but in scenes that feature deep shadows like Wallace's dark office or Sapper Morton's dark, shadowy home. There were a few instances on the album where it just sounded a bit strained without some dynamic level overhead on my main system.

First off, our blade runner “K” is led by superior officer at the LAPD, “ Lieutenant Joshi” ( Robin Wright), who he reports back to constantly. Beyond the apparent uptick in image detail and clarity, the real standout is color, contrast, and black levels thanks to a smartly applied HDR10 grading. That led to a sequel being developed, with Denis Villeneuve in the director's chair and Ryan Gosling in the central role. And the memory moments - both 'remembered' and 'created' makes for some of the most stunningly realised footage you'll ever see.I know I'm going to be coming back to this film over and over again in the years and decades to come. So close that the margin of difference is really only quantifiable to that moment of first discovery. From the opening first scene, and the literal opening of an eye, you will behold the massive amount of detail to be found here in 4K, but more on that later. The original film touched upon these themes, but they are given more weight in 2049, which makes for a more engaging story. The terrific score by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch sets the tone with low thundering bass notes that echo Vangelis' work on the first film but gives this film its own flavor.

While the small boost in luminance range and consistently enriched colors are certainly welcome, though, and manage to deliver a visual experience that exceeds the one I had in a (non-Dolby Vision) cinema, it’s hardly a demo-grade showcase of what HDR can do. Pressed onto a Region Free BD-100 disc, the discs are housed in a standard black 4K Ultra HD case with identical slipcover artwork. Might as well wait for when true ultra-hi-def movies are more plentiful and broadcasts are available. Ford gets to play a three-dimensional character, caustic and sarcastic (as he can be), and turning the role into one of genuine anguish and sadness.

Based on my experience with 4K streaming, the bitrates are significantly lower than the UHD Blu-Ray. Nowhere to Run (HD 5:49) This expands on Dave Bautista's Sapper Morton and how the character became a rogue Nexus 8 replicant. The noise floor is extremely high and IMO there's no benefit and a waste of money going "hi-res" on a recording that doesn't even tax 16-bit CD resolution! Given that Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel to one of the most celebrated science fiction films ever made, its collection of bonus features is a bit on the anemic side of things. Blaster shots bring expected bombast, particularly when Deckard cranks out his older hand cannon, and you'll wonder if the house is coming down when the assault team blasts through the wall.
