About this deal

At first glimpse the best mountain bike stems may seem simple, but they can still have an impact on the performance of your bike. Elements like weight, stiffness, and length all play a part, and can influence the way your bike responds to steering inputs. We’ve tested a range of different stems to find out, not only which ones are the best on offer, but also which are best for a range of different applications and riding preferences. Although bike stems may look simple, there’s a significant amount of complexity in choosing the right one for your bike, largely due to the bike industry’s custom of developing multiple standards. Only ever tighten your torque bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended setting. Dave Caudrey / Immediate Media This can make for a more rigid structure and is typically more aero than a separate bar and stem – because cables are round and face into the wind, they contribute a surprising amount of drag – but comes at the expense of adjustability. First instinct is as YW says above - the frame is too big. Putting the saddle so far forward will affect your pedaling too - part of the bike fit should have included fore/aft saddle position.

I currently have a 60mm stem and quite fancy treating myself to a little bling in the flavor of a nice shiny CNC’d stem. On a basic level, the stem has a simple job: to connect your handlebar with the fork steerer tube and, with it, the rest of the bike. Most stems fitted on off-the-shelf bikes have a moderate amount of rise; however, stems with a more extreme amount of rise provide the option to significantly adjust the position of your handlebar. We’ve covered stems that are available in lengths from 25mm up to 100mm. We concentrated mostly on shorter reach units as that’s the most common upgrade switch for more responsive, lighter feeling steering. We’ve covered both 31.8mm and 35mm handlebar diameter stems too. Are shorter MTB stems better? The Paul Components Boxcar Stem (silver) is the perfect combination of stiffness, strength and reasonable weight and may be the coolest looking stem right now! For steerer tubes, the typical diameter is 1-1/8in, although some bikes will have a 1-1/4in steerer diameter. The length of your stem can have a significant impact on the fit and handling of your bike. There’s also usually a slight angle between the steerer tube clamp and the long axis of the stem. We’ll explain the significance of both later.

Stem length is one of a number of factors, along with head tube angle and fork rake, that affects a bike’s handling.

The stem has a trapezoid shape with a flattened top section for torsional stiffness and excellent aerodynamic performance. Stems are either 3D forged or CNC machined from an aluminium billet (basically a chunk of metal). Forging sees aluminium squeezed under immense pressures into (close to) the stem’s final shape. The technique compresses the material around high stress areas, and it’s argued produces a stiffer product with a better-aligned, denser grain structure. The initial forging cost is expensive and the finish is sometimes less angular, although you do see stems that are forged initially and then tidied up on a CNC machine. If you are having to put a 90mm stem on your DC bike to fit well, you simply bought too small of a bike and trying to make up for it with an extra long stem is a fools game. Sell the frame and start over.

Old-school bikes had a quill stem. This was an inverted L-shape, with the shaft of the stem slotting down into the top of the fork’s steerer tube, and secured by an expander bolt with an (in most cases) Allen key head at its top. Generally speaking, a shorter stem will result in faster handling, while a longer stem will result in slower, more predictable handling. Crafted by master machinists in Japan these CNC aluminium stems manage to be both incredibely stylish and incredibly light. MTB stems from the leading cycle brands including Race Face, Deda and Nukeproof help cyclists to enjoy a better ride and control the steering. Yeah you're right chaps the winter big has a way too long top tube, I think the combination of age and injuries has made it more noticeable, it used to be fine (like most people it's my old good bike, a giant tcr)Perhaps the main USP of the Burgtec Enduro MK3 is that it is available in a 42.5mm length. It may sound daft and all rather Princess-and-the-pea, but a couple of mm here and there with stems can certainly be felt by experienced riders. So if you’ve tried 40mm and 45mm stems and not quite gelled with them, here’s the (42.5mm length) stem for you! Industry Nine’s A-Series mountain bike stems are crafted from domestically-sourced 7075 aluminum billet into a svelte design achieving a nexus of form and function. Using advanced manufacturing techniques honed over decades in our CNC machine shop, we continue our proud tradition of offering riders uncompromising components. Modern road bike bars are usually 31.8mm in diameter at the centre, but older bars were more commonly 25.4mm. There are normally a number of spacers on top of the headset. You can raise and lower the stem, and with it adjust the height of your handlebar, by moving spacers above or beneath the stem.

60mm stem to a 70mm - much difference expected? 60mm stem to a 70mm - much difference expected?

I've switched from a 100mm to 60mm...and am still alive. Can't say I notice this as being unduly twitchy and certainly not life threatening. I don't think an inch or two makes a difference Its been easy enough on the CX bike - 90 mm stem and a set of short reach compact bars has got me within millimetres of it. Most stems tend to come between 30 and 50mm these days. Shorter stems aren't technically "better", they will give your bike sharper and faster reacting handling. How we test Used on some downhill mountain bikes. Requires a fork with mounting points built in. 1 1/8in steerer, 25.4mm/26mm bar clamp There are two diameters to get right when choosing a stem: that of the steerer tube and that of your handlebars.Stem length has a big impact on the overall fit and ride of your bike. David Caudery / Immediate Media Between the stem faceplate and steerer tube, the stem is made up of a length of aluminium or carbon fibre, though titanium is occasionally used. A shorter stem will reduce the reach and provide a more upright position, which might help if you’re feeling too stretched out. On the flip side, if you’re feeling cramped on the bike, using a slightly longer stem will increase the reach.
