Description

You can also use an ultrasonic cleaner do to this, but using a resealable container is cheaper. When the cleaning solution is running clear with no discolouration or contaminants you know your chain is clean. Should I spend more on chain lube? If you are reading this guide you may well know this already. But we will include it anyway. WD40 isn't a chain lubricant and there are far more effective options out there. WD40 (the brand) also makes a range of bike-specific chain lubricants now that are better suited to the job, so save the WD40 (the product) for un-seizing or protecting metal parts. How can I clean my chain properly?

The frequency of cleaning and lubrication should be for every 500 miles (800 kilometres) of distance travelled by the bike. Using Tungsten Disulfide which, without getting too nerdy, is a very smooth and slippery component that's perfect for a chain lubricant. So slippery in fact the lube almost wants to slide off your chain links when applying.Waxed-based drip lubes are popular because they work well in both wet and dry conditions and for on and off-road applications. Wax lubes are made up of friction modifiers and or products like tungsten disulfide which are often emulsified in a carrier fluid; the liquid helps the particles get where they need to be and dries, leaving just the wax inside. Due to the nature of wax, it dries and doesn’t attract much grit and can also support additives like Teflon, while coating and protecting metal components. Side Note – WD-40. will remove any other lubricants on your chain. If you want to put a different lubricant on your chain you’ll need to make sure all of the WD-40 product has been fully cleaned from the chain. The four-ball anti-wear test in IP 239 sees one ball sitting on top of another three, with a static load of 40kg at ambient temperature. The top ball is spun at 1,475rpm for 60 minutes, then the wear scars on the balls are measured radially and perpendicular under a microscope. The results are averaged out, giving a Mean Wear Scar Diameter. For every chain lubricant listed here, starting with a properly cleaned chain is essential for optimum performance and for you to enjoy its performance benefits. Cleaning regime: religious or couldn't care less, degrease or don't degrease first, brush or chain machine

Most modern bikes use a chain with O-rings (or X-rings) that seal in grease from the factory between the rivet and the bushing, which keeps it flexing smoothly and reduces internal wear. That’s there for the lifetime of the chain, which is why you don’t want to be too aggressive with your cleaning, or use products that could penetrate. There are many cyclists who primarily use WD-40 and have had no issues. In dry conditions it can arguably keep your chain cleaner longer than regular bike lubricants, because is less oily.Lower numbers are best in this graph showing the results of the IP 239 four-ball anti-wear; the performance of the XCP is truly outstanding. You love riding your bicycle through different terrains, over sandbanks, dirt paths, and in hot, dry climates. But do you ever wonder how different terrains can affect your bike chain? Sometimes your bicycle can suffer from the dirt and dust that gets displaced when you ride. This debris can cause friction in your chain, ultimately affecting your performance. Here at WD-40®, we have the solution! Our WD-40 Bike® Dry Lube is perfect for bike chains in dry conditions. It has been specially formulated as a bicycle chain lube for off-roaders who like dry and dusty conditions. Keep reading below for a guide on how to lubricate your bike chain.

So wheel off then. But even with the gentlest of pressure, holding the stubby nozzle right up to the chain, there's still enough overspray to coat both chainstays and rear mech in un-needed lubricant. Yes it will wipe off, but it leaves a detectable mark on even freshly cleaned and degreased metal. Only when the rear wheel receives this power and starts to move forward, the motorcycle will start moving forward.

How to Lubricate Your Bike Chain

Despite releasing All-Conditions, Wet and Indoor lubricants this year, the All Conditions lube is closest to the previous UFO drip in performance but is now white instead of grey. The CeramicSpeed bottle has a 'pea' inside to help mix the lubricant, the only lube to have this. Application is also easy with a very fine nozzle. WD-40 recommends this Bike All Conditions Lube 'for chains, derailleurs, pivot points, cables and shifters'. In other words, everything on your bike that moves against something else. Ignoring the last four, because it's impossible to measure its performance against any other spray aerosol product, I've focused on the chain. Here, it's moderately effective, but really no different to other spray lubricants, and works out quite expensive because you have to keep applying. Friction causes heat, but the lubed chain on Rutter’s S1000RR was temperature tested as it came into the pits after the TT and it was showing just 38°C; something reduced the potential for heat to be caused through friction. Water from a wet ride will carry contaminants into your chain links and there they will stay, wearing your chain from the inside unless they are removed and contamination is reset. You should therefore try to avoid just re-lubricating your chain after a wet ride if you can help it. If a chain and cassette are worn out after 3000 miles, for example, this could be within a year's worth of riding for plenty of cyclists. The cost of a new chain and cassette will far exceed a bottle of more premium chain lubricant. I have had to explain to plenty of cyclists that their drivetrain is completely worn out and needs replacing which has resulted in a large bill. It's never a nice conversation, especially if you're on the receiving end of the bad news, but it's something that's totally avoidable with a little effort and the right chain lube. What are penetration issues?
