Description

This allows The Fourth Horseman to crash into the main spire and deploy 10k marines while the fleet disengages. With The Buried Dagger and several shorts being dedicated to Mortarion’s life on Barbarus The Pale King inevitably falls into the latter camp. Perhaps this is because the fight takes place on a flat plane of ground, which requires no description at all, but I believe that the quality of the prose surrounding the fight within the capital city could have been significantly improved if it had been focused on one area like this latter battle was. Non-chronological telling of a brutal compliance (and Morty being knocked by Sanguinius and Horus for said brutality, which may or may not have been justified).

The plot itself was compact, full of tension and pushed the narrative forward with every single page. They manage to blow them up, but many die after the tunnels are filled with molten ore from the factories afterwards which earns Typhon a promotion. The details of Galaspar's society painted a pretty good image of the life of the slaves and Comptrollers which made for an great background. However, my favorite part were perhaps the Digger/Sinis scenes and the way in which she perceived Morty.

I’m not sure if I’ve merely selected the wrong ones, or if maybe the questions I have about the primarchs are so niche and weird that the series doesn’t touch them. David Annandale is the author of the Warhammer Horror novel The House of Night and Chain and the novella The Faith and the Flesh, which features in the portmanteau The Wicked and the Damned. Bitter and frustrated from being unable to complete his mission in Barbarus, eager to prove himself to his brothers and newly unified Death Guard and most of all, absolutely ready to decapitate some tyrants. He wants to release the downtrodden and spare anyone who has been exposed to cruelty similar to the experiences of his childhood. A fact that leads to an overall deterioration in the realism of the space where most of the novel is set. Banish all thoughts of mercy, because mercy is the plaything of the coward and the lie of the tyrant.

It’s a particularly bad lapse in the prose because what little descriptions we get describe the arcology as an incredibly tight space, which stands in direct contrast to the moments where Mortarion and the Death Guard fight against vehicles inside of the city. Meet Mortarion - the immortal demi-god with an intense hatred of brutal, oppressive regimes but who also really, really enjoys scything his was through enemies who are inevitably weaker than he is. Such easy alterations, in my mind, prove there is a better book buried within the one that was published, but perhaps Mr. Everyone takes a varying amount of some drug that keeps the population docile or makes the overseers more aggressive. It does not wallow in endless repetitions of combat yet nor does it strand in long high minded dialogues. The standout was a newly introduced character named Digger but there's a few familiar faces that make an appearance. While I’ve read The Buried Dagger, I’ll be honest that I don’t love the “he had no choice” answer offered. As is often the case with this series, a hundred or so more pages would really help- the hints at the Legion’s preparation for this war are tantalising hints that id love to have seen more of, and likewise for the mentions of blending the Terran and Barbarus drawn recruits.

Annandale doesn’t give the reader an understanding of what the arcology looks like or how the different zones of battle relate to one another. This novel provides a nice little insight into the Pale King and adds some depth the the Horus Heresy. Horus and Sanguinius arrived on the main planet of the Galaspar cluster first and are looking about. A solid entry to the Primarchs series that definitely earns itself a place in the upper strata of the bunch. For Warhammer Age of Sigmar he has written Neferata: Mortarch of Blood and Neferata: The Dominion of Bones. Some good insight into Mortarion’s character, through the lens of his first campaign and “compliance”. H. Right after they merge the two factions of the Dusk Raiders and Death Guard, so we see how Mortarion thinks and acts as a leader and savior. Then I saw that David Annandale had been announced to pen the book and my hopes sank a little further.
