About this deal

The scenarios start with a straight dogfight over France and gradually introduce additional elements: Bombers, Ships, AAA, Airfields, Ground targets as they progress. In May, just a couple months after starting our work on Battle of Britain, Trevor and I reached out to Filip and Anthony Howgego at Osprey and let them know we were ready to show them the first prototype of the game. Last but not least, of course, there were the planes themselves - the units players actually take command of in Undaunted: Battle of Britain. For these the designers consulted RAF Fighters vs Luftwaffe Bombers, Spitfire vs Bf 109& Hurricane I vs Bf 110. Below we've included some of the illustrations from these books alongside the final artwork created for the plane tokens in the game... Not sure what game to buy next? And so, Undaunted: Battle of Britain was born – or at least conceptualized! Osprey wanted it as a 2023 release, timed for either UK Games Expo (June) or GenCon (August). Trevor and I needed to complete the core gameplay concepts by June 2021, complete 80% of the design by December 2021, and hand over everything by March 2022. The timeline meant that Trevor and I would have just under a year to complete the design for the game. While a year might seem like plenty of time, we were also juggling quite a few other projects, our day jobs, and family life. So we got started right away. Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse review - "The setting is glorious, but struggles to make the transition"There are scenario specific objectives for each side which can be eliminating enemy aircraft or targets and/or escaping unharmed. In scenarios I played the final outcome can be on a knife edge. For example Scenario 6 based on an actual raid that resulted in the bombing and loss of the destroyer HMS Codrington saw the outcome hinge on who got Initiative on the last turn. In my case it was the RAF and the destroyer was saved but if the Germans had gained that Initiative they would have successfully sunk it! Worth A BOB Or Two? Undaunted: Battle of Britain is a standalone game in the Undaunted series, adapting the core gameplay of the previous games to recreate the dynamic dogfighting of aerial combat. Maintain cohesion between your pilots, evade anti-aircraft artillery, and leverage talented aces to win the battle for the skies! It is also competively priced for such a quality product. One thing that could enhance it is to have actual model miniature planes. I have seen these available from a 3rd party, built on special stands that hold the tear-shaped markers. I’ll probably get these at some point although it will take some patience to paint them nicely. Historical Note Summer, 1940. The German war machine has rolled across the continent in less than a year, crushing all before it. Britain is all that stands in the way of German victory in Europe. Command the pilots of the battle-tested Luftwaffe, looking to extinguish all resistance and pave the way to invasion, or the resourceful and determined RAF opposing them at every turn.

Undaunted is almost ready to take to the skies with the latest instalment, Battle of Britain . But before then, hear from co-designer David Thompson all about the design process behind the scenes of this exciting new direction for the series... Undaunted: Battle of Britain is a standalone game in the Undaunted series, adapting the core gameplay of the previous games to recreate the dynamic dogfighting of aerial combat. Final Score: 3 stars – Battle of Britain reenacts the fate of Europe from the safety of a bird’s eye view. In the Undaunted series, Undaunted: Battle of Britain is a stand-alone game that borrows gameplay elements from the earlier titles to replicate the dynamic dogfighting of aerial battle. To win the aerial war, keep your pilots working together, avoid the anti-aircraft fire, and take use of your outstanding aces.

Along the same line, the aircraft illustration doesn’t do enough to distinguish between the two different sides of the war. The Luftwaffe have a darker token, but it does little to contrast with the RAF. As a comparison, it was very easy to know which units were yours in Stalingrad. Soviets were white, Germans were gray. Here, this is further muddled by units on each side sharing the same letter/number combinations. Did I just move your Y1 plane? Oh, I thought that was my Y1 plane. Now, where were we? Card illustration remains excellent though the card variety isn’t as unique as in other Undaunted sets. Final Thoughts: The combatants consist of 11 RAF planes, all fighters – Mk I Spitfires and Hurricanes and Boulton Paul Defiants whilst the Luftwaffe has 15 planes (plus 4 decoys ) fighters Messerschmitt Bf 109 E and 109 F, fighter bomber Messerscmitt Bf 110 C, dive bomber Junkers Ju 87 Stuka and bomber Heinkel He 111. These are all presented on teardrop shaped counters which gives the indication of their facing. There are also red dotted lines showing the direction in which their guns fire. For all of the fighters this is just straight ahead with the exception of the Defiants with their rear gun turret which can fire in any other direction except straight ahead!

Osprey Games is the dedicated games division of Osprey Publishing (part of Bloomsbury Publishing plc) and publishes a wide range of wargames, card games, and board games and roleplaying games. Gents, we’re ready to show you the core gameplay concept we’ve developed for Undaunted: Battle of Britain. The concept is that the players play elements of the RAF and Luftwaffe from Dunkirk through the Blitz. Each unit = 1 plane, so players are controlling about six aircraft each in a typical scenario. We’ve included a couple screenshots from the most recent test (RAF fighters trying to stop BF 110C’s bombing key targets, while they are defended by BF 109E/Fs).” Over the next couple weeks, Trevor and I met often, comparing our research and notes, chatting about what we felt would make for the most engaging game, while also leveraging the core Undaunted system. We knew the game had to feel like Undaunted, but we were also willing to push the system to the extreme. For future games, on account that Normandy, North Africa, and Stalingrad will exist, I would love to do something a bit different, so Battle of Britain seems like a great fit.”There’s some great difficult decision making and risk taking here. Do you fire at a distance, hoping you’ll get to move in closer and take another shot before zipping by, or get right up close now for the best chance of hitting, knowing that by doing so you’re putting your own plane in a vulnerable spot? We immediately started to compile research material. We hadn’t actually settled on the scale of the game yet, and our research would help us make that decision. Who were the players in this game? Did they control entire squadrons? And if so, what did each counter on the board represent? Each card?
